Canada public schools to accommodate Islamic prayer

Once again non-Muslims change their customs and practices to accommodate Muslims. When in Muslim countries, non-Muslims must adapt to Islamic mores. When in non-Muslim countries, non-Muslims must adapt to Islamic mores.

“Dedicated prayer rooms may be part of new approach by province’s schools,” by Liz Monteiro for The Record, January 29 (thanks to Laurie):

WATERLOO REGION — Walk through the wooden door into the secluded, carpeted room with holy books and prayer mats, and it’s hard to believe you’re in a school.

But this is the beginning of a new phase for public and Catholic schools where prayer rooms could become commonplace.

Under a provincewide policy, school boards must be more inclusive and accommodate different faiths during the school day.

This could mean a private place for Muslim students who pray five times a day and for students who are fasting, a modified gym class and a separate room for them so they don’t have to watch their peers eat lunch.

Atieh Noori, a 27-year-old Muslim student at St. Louis Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centre in downtown Kitchener, uses the prayer room each day at lunchtime to say her midday prayers.

After school, Noori doesn’t have time for prayer so she appreciates the space.

“It’s quiet and there is light and no one comes here to bother me,” said the Afghan-born Noori, who came to Canada in 2007 via Iran.

At St. Louis, the prayer room was set up about eight years ago to accommodate many of the English-as-a-second-language students who attend the school.

The newly adopted faith and accommodation policy states that each student has a right to follow his or her beliefs free from discrimination or harassment. Areas of reasonable accommodation include observance of major religious holy days and celebrations, prayers and rituals, dietary requirements and fasting, religious attire and participation in school curriculum and extracurricular activities.

“Someone’s faith is part of who they are. Accommodating them brings understanding and shows we respect them,” said public school trustee Cindy Watson….

U.K.: Islamic preacher banned for saying “Jews are enemy of Islam” still broacasting — on “PeaceTV”

But where did that bit of hate speech come from? What kind of seething bigot even comes up with stuff like that?

“Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews…” — Qur’an 5:82

“Banned hate preacher still broadcasting after ‘Jews are enemy of Islam’ claim,” by Tom Harper for the Evening Standard, February 11 (thanks to all who sent this in):

A radical preacher banned from entering the country may now lose the platform to broadcast messages of hate to British television screens.

Zakir Naik – who has claimed that “every Muslim should be a terrorist” – was banned from coming to Britain last June by Theresa May in one of her first major acts as Home Secretary.

But eight months on, the 45-year-old cleric is still a key figure in a company that holds an Ofcom-approved licence for Peace TV.

Now, the broadcasting watchdog has confirmed it is investigating the satellite channel, broadcast in English and Urdu, after receiving a complaint from a viewer over its extremist messages.

Programmes on Peace TV have included praise for “mujahideen” fighting British troops in Iraq, labelled Jews as an “enemy of Islam” and made claims about the 9/11 terror attacks being an “inside job”.

Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, former shadow minister for security, said: “The Home Secretary dealt with Naik extremely effectively. I think she will be furious to discover he still has a licence to spread his poison on satellite television. Ofcom should revoke it immediately.”

Naik was banned from entering the country after it was judged that his presence was “not conducive to the public good”.

The decision, later upheld by the High Court, was based on a sermon the Mumbai-based preacher had posted on the internet during which he said “every Muslim should be a terrorist”.

Naik has also been filmed saying: “There are many Jews who are good to Muslims, but as a whole the Koran tells us, as a whole, they will be our staunchest enemy.”

Qur’an 5:82.

Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan tape highlights foreign fighters, operations against Pakistani military

The al Qaeda-linked Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan has recently released a videotape that celebrates the deaths of foreign fighters in its ranks from Europe, Central Asia, and North Africa, and also highlights attacks against the Pakistani military in the tribal agency of South Waziristan.

Produced in December 2010 by Jundallah Studios, a jihadist media outlet that has published propaganda tapes from the IMU in the past, the videotape, titled “Good News From Pakistan,” was released on a jihadist forum on Jan. 17. A copy of the videotape was published by Asia Times.

This latest IMU propaganda effort is aimed at IMU supporters and new recruits alike. Running just over 50 minutes in length, the tape highlights IMU fighters from across the globe who have been killed in recent fighting in Pakistan, and stresses the importance of waging jihad against the Pakistani state.

Abul-Harith.JPG

Abul Harith, a Tunisian who was killed in Pakistan while fighting along with the IMU.

The videotape also provides an interesting look at both the shifting nature of the IMU and the group’s continued inclusion of foreign fighters within its ranks.

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is an al Qaeda-affiliated group whose leadership cadre is based primarily in Pakistan’s Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan. The terror group operates primarily along the Afghan-Pakistani border and in northern Afghanistan. According to one estimate, more than 3,000 Uzbeks, Central Asian, and other foreign fighters belonging to the IMU are sheltering in North Waziristan.

The IMU’s former leader, Tahir Yuldashev, was killed in a US Predator airstrike in South Waziristan in September 2009. Yuldashev sat on al Qaeda’s top council, the Shura Majlis. He has been replaced by Abu Usman Adil.

The video celebrates the deaths of 19 IMU members from various countries, including Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russian, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, and Morocco. The exact date of their deaths is not disclosed. In the video, 10 of those featured were from Uzbekistan, three were from Tajikistan, two were from Russia, and one each were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Three of those killed (two Uzbeks and a Tajik) were “students” of “the jihad school ‘Commander Jumabai.’” Three other Uzbeks were Shariah, or Islamic law, officials. One of the Russians served as a trainer at a camp in Pakistan.

Another three Uzbeks were described as bodyguards; one of them, Moqatel, is seen sitting next to South Waziristan Taliban emir Waliur Rahman Mehsud and slain IMU leader Tahir Yuldashev. The IMU is known to provide bodyguards to leaders of the Pakistani Taliban, and Uzbeks are often among those killed when US Predators kill Taliban commanders in strikes in North and South Waziristan.

IMU commanders and camps

The videotape also identifies several previously unknown IMU commanders. Emir Sejana is lauded as a senior commander who has fought in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sejana is shown talking to scores of fighters in an open field. Ikhlas Yar is identified as Sejana’s deputy and the leader of the IMU’s “assault-commandos.”

Musa, a commander from Uzbekistan, is identified as “a trainer and leader in combat.” Musa trained at a camp in Chechnya that was run by Ibn Khattab, the slain leader of al Qaeda’s fighters in the Russian republic. Abdullah Ibn Zubair is identified as a trainer who runs one of the IMU’s “jihad schools.” Also, a German known as Abu Laith is seen on the tape.

In the videotape, the IMU also hints at the locations of its training camps. The Wana and Badr areas of South Waziristan, and Gardez in Paktia are said to have hosted IMU camps.

Pakistani Taliban supporters

The IMU heaps praise on Haji Noor Islam, a Taliban commander based in the Wana area of South Waziristan. Noor Islam has long been known to be an active supporter of Uzbek, Tajik, and Arabs fighters settled in South Waziristan.

The IMU said Noor supports the IMU’s operations in South Waziristan, married his own daughters to “noble guests,” and continues to carry out operations against the military despite being 55 years old.

“He has put up with hundreds of Muhajiroon [emigrants or foreign fighters] and sacrificed all of his property,” according to the IMU. “He has had his daughters married to the ‘noble guests,’ as he calls them. Even till today he participate in the fight at the age of 55.”

Noor Islam backed the IMU during its dispute with Mullah Nazir, the South Waziristan Taliban chief in Wana, in 2007 and 2008. The Pakistani government backed Nazir during those clashes, despite the fact that Nazir actively supports al Qaeda and harbors its leaders and fighters.

The IMU also praises Waliur Rahman Mehsud, and also shows footage of Mullah Dadullah Lang, the slain Afghan Taliban commander who embraced al Qaeda’s philosophy, tactics, and views on global jihad.

Attacks on Pakistani outposts in South Waziristan

The tape also includes footage of several attacks by the IMU in South Waziristan. The tape focuses on two operations: an April 2010 attack on a military convoy in the town of Kaniguram, and an August 2010 attack in the town of Bospa.

In the Bospa attack, the IMU is shown planning the operation, which included a mortar attack on a mountaintop base followed by machinegun and small arms attack. The Taliban claimed to have destroyed the Pakistani Army “trenches.” The IMU said the assault was led by Commander Sejana and was executed by 60 fighters.

In one of the clips, IMU fighters are seen holding the severed heads of Pakistani soldiers.

The Pakistani military claimed it defeated the Taliban last summer after launching an operation that started in October 2009. But Pakistani troops are reported to control only the major towns and the roadways, while the Taliban launch small-scale attacks in the rest of the tribal agency.

The tape ends with a chilling ‘preview’ of a future tape, which includes images of child recruits, and the following subtitle: “The Jihad of Pakistan: An Adventure for the whole family.”

Islamic Jihad Group operative captured in Afghan north

Coalition and Afghan special operations forces captured an Islamic Jihad Group (IJG) facilitator in the course of two recent raids in the Afghan north.

International Security Assistance Force and Afghan troops first targeted and missed capturing the operative during a Feb. 9 raid in the district of Nahr-e Shahi in Balkh province, an ISAF press officer told The Long War Journal. But during a second raid, in the district of Dowlatabad, also in Balkh, the IJG facilitator and several “insurgents” were detained.

The IJG facilitator “is responsible for coordinating the movement of foreign fighters from Iran and Pakistan into Afghanistan,” ISAF stated in a press release. ISAF often uses “foreign fighters” to describe al Qaeda operatives and members of affiliated terror groups.

ISAF is seeking to determine whether the IJG operative is from Afghanistan or from outside the country.

“The targeted individual’s nationality is still being verified at this time,” the ISAF press officer told The Long War Journal.

The raid against the IJG in Balkh is the first of its kind in the province. Over the past four years, ISAF and Afghan special operations forces have targeted IJG commanders and facilitators during raids in Kunduz district in Kunduz province, Besmil and Khost districts in Khost province, and Zadran district in Paktia province.

The Islamic Jihad Group (also known as the Islamic Jihad Union) is a splinter faction of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. The Islamic Jihad Group is based out of the Mir Ali region of Pakistan’s tribal agency of North Waziristan, where it maintains close ties with al Qaeda leader Abu Kasha al Iraqi, and with North Waziristan Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadar, who controls the Datta Khel region. It is a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization.

German and Turkish Muslims make up a significant portion of the IJG. Its fighters are often referred to as German Taliban, and they carry out attacks in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. In 2009, the IJG released video of ‘German Taliban villages’ in Waziristan. Its fighters were seen training at camps and conducting military operations.

The IJG was also at the center of a plot to carry out Mumbai-like terror assaults in European cities which was discovered in the summer of 2010 after an IJG operative was captured in northern Afghanistan. Shortly after the plot was exposed, unmanned US Predator and Reaper strike aircraft pounded IJG camps in North Waziristan, killing dozens of IJG fighters and commanders, including several Germans.

“This Is Not An Islamic Uprising”

EgyptIsrael

by Patrick Appel

Greg Scoblete flags a new poll by The Washington Institute:

The Muslim Brotherhood is approved by just 15 percent of Egyptians — and its leaders get barely 1 percent of the vote in a presidential straw poll. Asked to pick national priorities, only 12 percent of Egyptians choose sharia (Islamic law) over Egypt's regional leadership, democracy, or economic development. And, when asked to explain the uprising, the issues of economic conditions, corruption, and unemployment (around 30 percent each) far outpace the concern that "the regime is not Islamic enough" (only 7 percent).

Reports that Hamas is arresting Islamic Jihad rocketers

Palestine Press Agency quotes Asharq al-Awsat is reporting that Hamas arrested 10 members of Islamic Jihad’s Al Quds Brigades, to stop them launching rockets into Israel.

They also arrested three members of small Salafist groups for the same reason.

The article says that Hamas has been stepping up their patrols near the border and are searching for smuggled rockets.

The reason given is that Hamas does not want to give Israel an excuse for an invasion.

Senior cleric at one of Britain’s largest mosques threatens to sue over prime minister’s remarks on Islamic “extremism”

David Cameron stopped well short of accusing Islam itself of playing a role in jihadist violence and aggressive displays of Islamic supremacism in the U.K. But he criticized the Birmingham Central Mosque directly, and one of its senior clerics is angry enough to try to sue the prime minister.

That raises a familiar set of questions: Why is outrage like this reserved for people reporting on and criticizing Islamic “extremism?” Where is this outrage when supposed “misunderstanders” of Islam abuse non-Muslims and women in ways that spokesmen and apologists tell us are heretical? Where is the outrage when they cause actual bloodshed, sometimes on a massive scale?

As ever, the true fury is reserved for cartoons, unbelievers demanding their rights, and now… David Cameron. “Muslim threat to sue David Cameron for libel,” by Macer Hall for the Express, February 9 (thanks to J):

A senior Muslim leader at one of Britain’s largest mosques is threatening to sue David Cameron for libel over his recent criticism of Islamic extremism.

Mohammad Naseem, chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque, revealed that he was consulting lawyers.

He took exception to a suggestion by the PM that some worshippers at the mosque believed that the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US were part of a Jewish conspiracy.

Mr Cameron cited the Birmingham mosque, attended up to 20,000 worshippers on holy days, as an example of one place where extremist ideas could be spread.

He said in an interview at the weekend: “You have to confront the extremism itself.

“You have to say to the people in Birmingham Central Mosque, or wherever, who are saying 9/11 is a Jewish conspiracy, that that is not an acceptable attitude to have.

“We don’t tolerate racism in our society, carried out by white people, we shouldn’t tolerate extremism carried out by other people.”

His remarks followed his controversial speech in Munich on Saturday arguing that multi-culturalism had been a failure in Britain and calling for a bigger effort in tackling the ideology of Islamic extremism.

But his singling out of the Birmingham mosque has angered Dr Naseem.

He said: “I have just instructed the mosque’s solicitors to take appropriate action. We will be taking advice about libel action.”

Mr Cameron has highlighted extremist attitudes among parts of Birmingham’s Muslim community before.

In 2007 after staying overnight in the city he blogged that some doubted the 9/11 and 7/7 attacks were caused by Muslims and wondered if videos of the London outrage were fake.

Accusations of fabrication are a common form of conspiracy paranoia in Islamic countries. Perhaps they are more understandable in the context of the Qur’an’s accusation that Jews and Christians undertook a massive effort to sanitize their own scriptures of references to Muhammad and insert non-Islamic teachings. That sets the stage for the expectation of grand fabrications (however far-fetched) by infidels of absolutely anything in order to defame Islam.

Egyptian journalist: “The US will be transformed into an Islamic republic”

Why is the U.S. so important for the future of Islam? Because it is the foremost secular republic in the world, and thus the chief competitor to the Islamic vision of the Sharia state. If it falls, so will the rest of the free world. “Egyptian Journalist ‘Ata Abd Al-Aal: ‘The US Will Be Transformed into an Islamic Republic,’” from MEMRITV, December 12, 2010 (thanks to Observer):

Following is an excerpt from an interview with Egyptian journalist ‘Ata Abd Al-Aal, which aired on Al-Rahma/Al-Rawdha TV on December 12, 2010.

‘Ata Abd Al-Aal: The rate of converts to Islam in the US is very high. This is of great alarm to the Zionist circles in the US, because this rate is rising on a daily basis. These converts adhere to Islam with total conviction. They become preachers themselves, and convince others to convert to Islam. You are more knowledgeable than me in this issue, and you know that many Americans convert to Islam every day. […]

[Ultimately,] the US will be transformed into an Islamic republic, as a sheik in the US told me. He said that the most important place for the future of Islam, after Mecca and Medina, was the US.
