The Ulsterman Report: Once Again, Sarah Palin Emerges Stronger

The script had been formulated long before the first bullet of deranged shooter Jared Lee Loughner rang out just outside a Safeway in Tucson Arizona last week.  The liberal wing of the Democratic Party, still gnashing their teeth over the rebuke against them in the November Midterm Elections, were desperate for a scapegoat.  The equally liberal media were only too happy to assist them by once again failing to actually report the facts, but rather quickly make those facts up to more fully coordinate with the much-desired outcome – that the shooting in Arizona was the result of rightwing bigotry, vitriol, rhetoric…etc.

The primary target of these attacks, once again, was Sarah Palin.

It remains a mystery why Palin so enrages the left.  From one side of their mouth they attempt to marginalize her as an inconsequential moron, some Alaskan redneck former beauty pageant breeder of too many children.  At the same time, they declare her dangerous, cunning, a too-powerful figure corrupting the minds of mainstream America.  The many contradictions contained within the liberals’ hatred (yes, I am using that word – because it is appropriate) of Sarah Palin willfully goes unnoticed by them.  They simply march on, gleeful in their collective and repeated attacks against the former governor of Alaska.  Sarah Palin is a woman.  Sarah Palin is a conservative. Sarah Palin is Pro-Life.  Sarah Palin is pro-gun rights.  Sarah Palin talks of her love of God and country. Sarah Palin has the audacity to openly (and effectively) mock liberalismWe must destroy her.

And so on that terrible day last week in Tucson, these same liberals, politicians and media figures alike, grabbed from the same script and pointed to Sarah Palin as the murder weapon.  The deserving evidence?  Non-existent of course – but in the odd and emotionalized world of the liberal mind, evidence and facts are mere suggestions – the outcome is the only thing that truly matters.  Destroy Sarah Palin – by any means necessary.  For by destroying Sarah Palin, by blaming her for the killings in Tucson, liberals hoped to destroy the Tea Party, and the now growing conservative movement throughout the United States.  Grandiose you say?  Perhaps – but it is also true.

First to the scene were the liberal bloggers such as Daily Kos who took a map Palin utilized months ago targeting specific districts in the November elections.  This kind of map is nothing new, having been used by both Democrats and Republicans a number of times in the past.  The DNC utilized just such a map in 2004, and longtime Democratic Party strategist Bob Beckel admitted such mapping and the term “targeting” has been around as long as he has been in politics – and ironically, the Daily Kos had “targeted” Giffords’ district most recently, as they felt she was far too conservative to be trusted.  A long rant on the Kos blog stated repeatedly that Giffords was “dead” due to her vote against Nancy Pelosi.

The mainstream media though happily took its cue from the far left liberal bloggers and pushed ahead with the Palin election map.  Look!  Palin is the true killer!  Even as mounting evidence suggested the shooter had nothing to do with the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, Fox News, or even politics as a whole, the media persisted.  Even though Congresswoman Giffords was well known by her District and inside the Beltway as a political moderate who had most recently voted against Nancy Pelosi as House Leader, the media persisted.  Even as former friends of Jared Loughner described him as a liberal radical who blamed former President Bush for 9/11, the media persisted.  ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC – all of them, hour after hour, insinuated the shooting was the by-product of conservative rhetoric, with Sarah Palin being held up as the prime example.  Far left New York Times columnist Paul Krugman made the case against Palin with his typical vacuous snideness, blanketing conservatives with the description of “hate mongers”.  John Nichols of The Nation was even more misleading with the facts than most, forging a full on misrepresentation of Jared Loughner as a far-right extremist upset over Giffords’ vote for Obamacare and taking cues from Palin’s now infamous statement that conservatives should not retreat but “reload” when battling liberalism.  Here is a video showing the appalling contradiction of media coverage regarding the Arizona shootings vs the Fort Hood massacre of a year earlier:

And what is the outcome of all of this concerted effort by far left liberals to portray Sarah Palin and conservatism as the cause of the Tucson Tragedy?  If anything, liberals have simply managed to once again further marginalize themselves in the eyes of America.  Conservatives are rallying to defend Palin, and with polls indicating the vast majority of the public recognizes the liberal slant blame-game that has been the coverage following the shooting, so too are many independents ignoring the liberal media and Democratic politicians.

As for Sarah Palin herself, she has again emerged a stronger figure than before.  Even Barack Obama, during his speech at this week’s Tucson memorial service, seemingly sided with Palin in dismissing the Far Left’s attempts to place blame outside of the singular actions of a deranged gunman.  Whether or not Sarah Palin can develop into a viable Republican candidate for President of the United States remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – as an ever-popular conservative voice, she will not be silenced.  She will repeatedly prove her worth in battling the liberal horde and revealing the insipid hatred always bubbling beneath the surface that is the mainstream media and DC politics.

Don’t retreat Sarah.

With most recent polls showing a surge in President Obama’s approval, a new Public Policy Polling survey finds the president in his best position against the major Republican contenders since 2009.

Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee each trail the president by five points. The next tier is even further behind: Newt Gingrich trails by 12 points and Sarah Palin is behind by 17 points.

Meanwhile, Larry Sabato has a nice analysis of 19 possible GOP challengers to Obama.

British paper to Obama: What do you mean, you have no stronger ally than France?

Special relationship.

I have to blog it, as stories about The One rudely snubbing the Brits have practically become a staple on righty blogs. Readers love ‘em, I think, partly because they’re seen as evidence of his disrespect for American traditions and partly because, when it comes to Britain, his toolishness manifests itself in ways cloddish and […]

Fed Tilting Stronger Toward Disinflation

Given that for the past three years the country has consistently experienced an unusually high level of unemployment, and unusually low rate of inflation, and unusually low level of aggregate demand it seems to me that the Federal Reserve should alter its policies to be less worried about inflation and more concerned that low AD is leading to low output and high unemployment. Certainly given that we’re looking at a changeover in members of the Fed’s Open Market Committee one would hope for new FOMC members who are skeptical of the status quo and eager to see more growth and more demand. Instead, Sewell Chan reports that we’re getting the reverse:

One is an economist who fears that the Fed’s easy-money policies could lead to manias like the housing bubble that burst in 2007. Another is a Texas Democrat who served in the Clinton White House, but is wary of the Fed’s aggressive efforts to combat unemployment. A third is a precocious economist who graduated from Princeton at 19. And the fourth is the only one who agreed wholeheartedly with the Fed’s chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, that the economy was at risk of falling into a dangerous cycle of deflation last summer and that an additional monetary boost was needed.

Peter Diamond, meanwhile, remains in limbo.

As I’ve said many times, I think Barack Obama’s administration has made many fewer errors than most of its critics on the left and the right believe. But part of what that means is that some of the errors it has made have been much more serious than is conventionally recognized. Failure to appreciate the importance of the Federal Reserve and the need to get good people confirmed in a reliable manner is very high on the list of errors.

Syria’s Nuclear Program Requires Stronger International Response

Although Iran and North Korea have received far more attention, Syria is belatedly becoming a prime focus of international concern over nuclear proliferation.

On December 1, the Institute for Science and International Security released satellite photos of suspected Syrian nuclear sites linked to the covert Al-Kibar nuclear reactor that Israeli warplanes bombed in 2007, shortly before it could begin operations. The CIA later confirmed that the site contained a North Korean–designed nuclear reactor that would have been capable of producing plutonium for nuclear weapons.

Syria blocked inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from investigating the suspected nuclear facility until after it had cleaned up the bombed site to remove incriminating evidence. Under strong international pressure, it reluctantly permitted IAEA inspectors a brief visit in 2008 but since then has stonewalled IAEA efforts to investigate its nuclear program.

On Thursday, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said that he sent a letter to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem formally requesting access to suspected nuclear sites. If Syria continues to block the IAEA investigation, its failure to comply with its nonproliferation commitments can be referred to the United Nations Security Council for further action. Similar nuclear defiance by Iran led to an escalating series of U.N. sanctions.

Iran is suspected of financing the covert Syrian reactor in an end run to acquire plutonium for nuclear weapons without risking the discovery of additional nuclear facilities on its own territory. Syria, which has little oil, does not have the economic resources or technological infrastructure to independently build an expensive nuclear weapons program. The tyrannical Syrian and Iranian regimes are close allies that have developed strong ties with North Korea, an outlaw nuclear power that has provided important military and nuclear assistance to both.

In February, Western officials leaked the fact that before Israel destroyed the Syrian reactor in September 2007, North Korea had delivered 45 tons of un-enriched uranium “yellow cake” to Syria and subsequently moved it to Iran via Turkey after the Israeli strike.

Despite U.N. sanctions, North Korea has continued to provide both Iran and Syria with missiles, components, and technology, and the recently revealed North Korean uranium enrichment plant at Yongbyon poses an additional proliferation risk. The Yongbyon facility appears to have a design similar to Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz. North Korea may have obtained Iranian help on uranium enrichment in exchange for its extensive assistance for Iran’s ballistic missile force, which is largely based on North Korean missile technology. Or there may have been a nuclear quid pro quo in the form of a transfer of its nuclear technology or plutonium to Iran.

Whatever the arrangement is, it is clear that Tehran and Pyongyang have secretively undertaken extensive nuclear cooperation. According to a senior North Korean defector: “The nuclear power and missile research institutes in the North and Iran are effectively one body. North Korean nuclear and missile scientists are in Iran and Iranian scientists are working in the North. They share everything.”

While Iran and North Korea have been forced by sanctions to pay a growing price for their nuclear defiance, Syria has so far escaped any consequences. This should be rectified as soon as possible. Polite letters from the IAEA will have little effect unless they are strongly backed by an international coalition determined to punish Damascus if it continues to drag its feet on its nonproliferation obligations. This requires firm American leadership.

The Obama Administration could start by abandoning its diplomatic wooing of Syria and taking a harder line on Syria’s nuclear violations. A bipartisan group of eight congressional leaders wrote a December 2 letter to President Obama urging him to take stronger action against Syria’s nuclear program. The signers included Representatives Jeff Fortenberry (R–NE), Edward Markey (D–MA), Ed Royce (R–CA), and Brad Sherman (D–CA) and Senators John Ensign (R–NV), Kirsten Gillibrand (D–NY), Jon Kyl (R–AZ), and Joseph Lieberman (I-D–CT).

If the Obama Administration fails to provide the strong leadership needed to ensure more effective action at the IAEA and the U.N. Security Council, then Syria, a junior partner in the nuclear axis of evil, will continue to advance its illicit nuclear program with impunity.

Met Office finds “evidence for man-made warming has grown even stronger in the last year.”

Ahead of the latest UN talks on climate change in Mexico, the Met Office analyses long- and short-term trends in climate and reveals that the evidence for man-made warming has grown even stronger in the last year….

Dr Matt Palmer, an ocean observations specialist at the Met Office, said: “It is clear from the observational evidence across a wide range of indicators that the world is warming. As well as a clear increase in air temperature observed above both the land and sea, we see observations which are all consistent with increasing greenhouse gases.”

The blockbuster news from the UK’s Met Office is that they’ve reviewed the global temperature data and concluded that the apparent slow down in the rate of global warming (as measured by surface temperatures) may not be real.  It may largely be an artifact of “changes to sea-surface temperature measurement practices” along with “strong warming in the Arctic — where there are fewer observations.”

I’ll do a post on that Monday, but here’s the overview of the full analysis by the Met[eorological] Office (part of the Defence Ministry) of long and short-term climate trends:

There is overwhelming evidence of warming in a wide range of climate indicators, not just surface temperature. The picture for short-term trends is more complicated. Short-term variations are affected by natural variability and other factors as well as long-term warming. In the last 10 years the rate of warming has decreased whilst the rate of loss of sea-ice extent has increased — an apparent contradiction — the Met Office’s latest analysis of the science shows that this is entirely consistent with our understanding of how the climate behaves and with our model projections.

I would note that this Reuters story — “World warmer, short-term trends need study: report” — misses the point the Met Office is making.  The apparent contradiction is not a real one.

In providing the evidence of continued warming and drawing from the work of more than 20 institutions worldwide, the Met Office Hadley Centre compiled results for a range of climate indicators — not just surface temperature. The multiple data sets used for each indicator are from diverse sources such as satellites, weather balloons, weather stations, ships, ocean buoys and field surveys.

These changes include:

  • Increases in water temperature at the sea surface down a depth of hundreds of metres.
  • An increase in humidity as a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture.
  • Increases in sea level as warmer waters expand and land-ice melts.
  • Shrinking of Arctic sea-ice, glaciers and Northern Hemisphere spring snow cover.

Since the late 1970s the long-term rate of surface warming has been about 0.16 °C per decade. However, over the last decade the rate of warming has decreased.

Natural variability within the climate system could explain all of this recent decrease. Other factors could have contributed.

  • Changes in stratospheric water vapour
  • Solar variability
  • Increased aerosol emissions from Asia

The rate of warming has been underestimated in the last decade because of:

  • changes to sea-surface temperature measurement practices;
  • strong warming in the Arctic — where there are fewer observations.

Dr Vicky Pope said: “Our analysis confirms that the signals of warming are as strong as they ever have been. Improving our understanding of the factors that affect short- and long-term trends is helping us to improve our predictions of the future, helping others to make choices on mitigation and adaptation providing a more resilient future.”

I will do a full post on this new finding Monday.  I’m hoping to get some more info from the lead author of the sea-surface analysis.

Local cities prepare for stronger ethics rules

Stronger ethics rules are about to come to every city across Broward and Palm Beach counties.

In the wake of years of corruption scandals, voters extended the reach this month of new ethics codes from county government to apply all cities as well. Now, municipal officials in both counties are scrambling to prepare for the new era of ethics.

In Broward, every conversation between a city commissioner and a lobbyist will have to be disclosed. Commissioners will be barred from using city resources to solicit money for charity. They also won’t be allowed to accept expensive gifts.

Meanwhile, in Palm Beach County, a committee soon will begin drafting an updated version of the county Ethics Code so it covers municipalities. The soonest the ethics measures could start being enforced in the cities is Jan. 1, although officials estimate it could take until April to get the updated code approved.

Countywide inspector generals will have the power to root out misconduct in each of the 69 cities in the two counties.

“It’s time,” said longtime Hollywood activist Pete Brewer. “It’s a shame what’s taken place, and there needs to be some good, strong rules and oversight. There are a lot of crooked politicians here, and they need to keep investigating and putting them in jail.”
