-By Warner Todd Huston

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is starting a new effort to spotlight wasteful government spending in the Aloha State and one of the central parts of this program is a new website that the group promises will, “revolutionize government accountability in Hawaii by revealing waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars at the state and local level.”

The new site can be seen at hawaiisunshine.org.

The site, that was unveiled to the public Nov. 30th, exposes line item details for more than $ 12 billion in state spending and transfers since 2008. GRIH filed hundreds of open records requests to procure spending data from nearly every state agency, and has placed it online in an easily searchable database, for free use by interested citizens.

Not only will taxpayers be able to investigate how their tax dollars are being spent, but they will also be able to report questionable spending using “Pork Alerts” and strategize with other users in the site’s discussion forum. The site exposes spending such as the following:

  • $ 2,675 in dry cleaning bills
  • $ 780 for limousine services
  • Hundreds of thousands to Waikiki hotels
  • Nearly $ 60,000 to one company for office leasing
  • $ 120,000 to an individual artist
  • $ 218 to a home video store

The Grassroot Institute also released its 2010 Pork Report in March. The Pork Report revealed $ 300 million in [spending] was, abuse, and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars in Hawaii.

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is an independent, non-partisan think tank based in Honolulu. The Institute’s mission is to achieve a freer and more prosperous Hawaii through the principles of free markets, individual liberty and limited, more accountable government. Members of SAFE Citizen Patrol Unit “S” out in the field on operations

After watching the security situation on our southern border deteriorate to the point where the United States was now under the direct threat of the narco-insurgency destroying Mexico, I decided to put together an organization called SAFE (Secure America Forever) to help counter the threat.

As part of SAFE’s Information Division I began posting about the border here on Big Peace and Big Government. The first piece was called “American Rancher X, Part 1 & Part 2“.

Also as part of SAFE’s Information Division, we at SAFE decided to launch a documentary series called “SAFE On The Border”. Below is the first episode, “Cartel Sniper/Observation Posts On The U.S. Side Of The Border”.

Jimmy Kimmel pulls together his favorite moments from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin‘s new reality show and Jon Stewart remembers when Bill Clinton was a bi-partisan dream: “But I guess for Republicans, Bill Clinton is like a fine wine. The more you drink the harder it is to remember, ‘Oh I (bleep) hate wine’.”

Of Palin, whose TLC show set a record premiere audience for the network, Kimmel said: “It’s ‘Ice Road Soccer Mom.”’

Today’s Must See Moment — fast forward to 1:00 where George W. Bush drinks too much in David Letterman‘s “George W. Bush Press Tour Recap.”

“This is flipping fun.”

Via the Hollywood Reporter. Like I said in the O’Reilly/Behar thread, there are certain things that will forever be part of Hot Air’s DNA: Humpbot and “dude” items and atheism crap — and, of course, you know who. I don’t know what we’d do without her. My friends, the Tivo is set.

Obama impersonator debuts in Kentucky Senate race

(CNN) – President Obama speaks on behalf of Kentucky’s GOP Senate nominee in a new television ad.

Well, kind of.

Rand Paul’s latest ad, a 30-second spot released Monday and airing statewide, features an Obama impersonator talking about the “stamp of approval” his Democratic opponent, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, has given to “more spending and debt, bigger government and higher taxes.”

“Now there’s a guy I can work with in Washington,” the impersonator says.

The fake Obama’s Blackberry rings and, oh look, he’s receiving a call from Conway.

“This race is between Jack Conway and Rand Paul, no one else,” Conway spokeswoman Allison Haley told CNN in a statement. “Even with an impersonator, Rand Paul can’t hide that he wants seniors to pay a $ 2,000 Medicare deductible and for states to be able to legalize drugs.Rand Paul doesn’t understand Kentucky.”

Paul has tried to make Obama a major theme in the race, constantly trying to link Conway to the president’s agenda.Conway has tried to assure voters that he’d be an independent voice for them.

A CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last month revealed Conway and Paul are statistically tied, with 46 percent of likely voters supporting each candidate. Five percent of likely voters were undecided.

“She flirts. She’s a tease.”

Looks like the detente is over. This particular criticism, that Palin’s trying to advance herself professionally by being flirtatious, is an old favorite of Parker’s but it seems newly ironic after CNN’s flirty romcom-esque promo for her own show debuted last month. Even New York mag picked up on the vibe in its big tell-all […]

Mocked, Derided ‘Client Number 9′ Debuts on CNN Tonight

Today marks the scandal-scarred Eliot’s Spitzer’s debut as CNN’s newest co-host (with columnist Kathleen Parker, of the 8pm ET "Parker/Spitzer"). NewsBusters thought it might be worthwhile to review what Spitzer’s colleagues said about "Client Number 9" before he joined the network (although now, apparently, some CNN regulars think it’s okay to compare him to Martin Luther King).

No laughing matter.

A new one from the Committee for Truth(iness?) in Politics. Geraghty loves, loves, loves it but I’m guessing roughly 97 out of 100 people who watch it will end up saying “Who the hell’s that guy?” when Colby’s photo flashes by. For all the media hype he and Stewart enjoy, his audience clocks in at […]

Chamber Debuts 5 Question Survey

In the two months leading up to the mid-term elections, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants everyone — from Senate candidates to dog-catcher hopefuls — to know that job creation is paramount to voters. To do so, the Chamber’s Campaign for Free Enterprise is looking to arm millions of voters with five questions to ask political candidates.

The questions, which all have to do with the candidate’s view of free enterprise, include: “Do you believe that our free enterprise system is currently threatened?” “Do you believe that tax increases hurt job creation?” and “Do you believe that the uncertainty resulting from pending tax increases, higher government deficits, and more government regulations will hurt the economy?”

Stan Anderson, the managing director of the campaign, said at a press conference Thursday that the questions are as much about informing the public as it is about “sensitizing the candidates” to the fact that this is the “most important issue” to voters. The questions will be delivered to hundreds of state and local chambers nationwide and will be posted online.

Despite not offering a list of “preferable” answers to each of these questions, it is no secret that the Chamber of Commerce has been at odds with a number of initiatives set forth by the Democratic Party, from tax raises to campaign finance reform. Even after Pres. Obama‘s speech where he announced his plans to revitalize the economy Anderson said the Chamber is less than satisfied.
