House Ethics Panel Calls It A Night Without Decision On Rangel

November 15, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

Eight members of the House Ethics Committee have packed it in for the night after meeting in executive session to discuss the alleged ethics violations against Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY).

They will reconvene in executive session Tuesday morning, committee spokesman Sam Harvey told TPM. Harvey did not know whether the committee planned to meet at length again or simply issue a statement with their decision.

Just after 5 p.m. Monday, members of the committee filed out of a private hearing room adjacent to main hearing room without taking questions from reporters.

Members of the committee already found that no material fact was in dispute in the allegations against Rangel.

After a high-profile appearance before the committee sans lawyer on Monday morning, Rangel walked out of the rare hearing and retreated back to his office (but not before telling reporters that the process was unfair).

Rangel later issued a statement once again calling the process unfair.

The longtime New York congressman, who was re-elected with over 80 percent of the vote a couple weeks ago, faces 13 charges related to raising money for an educational center using Congressional letterhead, filing inaccurate tax returns and financial disclosures and using a rent-controlled apartment as a campaign office. The investigation has been going on for two years and Rangel is said to have racked up $ 2 million in legal bills.

Biden Advice to Coons: Don’t Stay the Night

November 15, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

(CNN) - Senator-elect Chris Coons of Delaware, who will be sworn in later today to fill out the final four years of Joe Biden’s Senate seat, got some advice Monday from the Vice President: don’t spend the night in Washington.

“He said make it as physically uncomfortable as possible to spend the night,” Coons recalled to a handful of reporters.

“Don’t get a nice place, don’t get a nice room. Get a cot in the office or rent something small and cramped and unpleasant because there will always be pressures to stay.”

Biden, a fervent Amtrak rider during his 36 years in the Senate, commuted home to Delaware every night to be with his family - a route he suggested Coons follow.

“If you get a nice comfortable place, the first year it is one night a week, the next year it is two nights a week and four years from now you will miss every game your son plays,” Coons said.

Asked by CNN if he was already a member of Amtrak’s frequent rider program, Coons demurred.

“Not yet, but we’re looking for one as soon as possible. We came down on Amtrak this morning,” he said.

At Least 300 Expected At Ex-House Speaker Jim Amann’s Retirement Party On Friday Night; Lost Bid For Governor

November 12, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

At least 300 people are expected Friday night at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington for former House Speaker Jim Amann’s retirement party.

Since leaving the state Capitol as a two-term speaker and longtime lawmaker, Amann has started working as a lobbyist for various causes. His most recent return was this week - announcing the filming of a submarine thriller called “Thunder In The Deep” that will be filmed in Connecticut.

Amann appeared with a crowd of officials that included author Joe Buff, two animation experts who flew in on the red eye from California, and various behind-the-scenes executives. The film is expected to create about 200 jobs in Connecticut, and the executive producer said that the film would not have come to Connecticut without the generous tax credits that Amann helped enact as speaker. Connecticut - with the submarine capital of the world - beat out Vancouver for the bulk of the work, but some filming will still be done in Vancouver.

Underappreciated: How Thoroughly Fox News Trounced CNN, MSNBC on Election Night

November 10, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

The politicians who received more votes than their opponents weren't the only winners on Election Night.

Fox News's dominance on Election Night was overwhelming. If the competition between Fox, CNN, and MSNBC had instead been an electoral contest, they would have called it 30 seconds after the polls closed.

The graphic that follows illustrates just how big Fox's gains were in 2010 compare to 2006, after a mediocre 2006 compared to 2002:

“Nazism, Firearm Registration, and the Night of the Broken Glass”

November 9, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

(David Kopel)

Reichskristallnacht was 62 years ago. Stephen Halbrook’s 2009 article in the St. Thomas Law Review details the close connection between the disarmament of the German Jews and what came next. From the conclusion:

Over a period of several weeks in October and November 1938, the Nazi government disarmed the German Jewish population. The process was carried out both by following a combination of legal forms enacted by the Weimar Republic and by sheer lawless violence. The Nazi hierarchy could now more comfortably deal with the Jewish question without fear of armed resistance by the victims.

It may be tempting to argue that the possession of firearms by the German Jews would have made no difference, either in the 1938 pogrom or later in the Holocaust, when the majority were deported and then eradicated in death camps. Yet this fatalistic view ignores that the Nazis themselves viewed armed Jews as sufficiently dangerous to their policies to place great emphasis on the need to disarm all Jews. In 1938, it was by no means certain that Jewish armed resistance movements could not develop, and even less certain that individual Jews would not use arms to resist arrest, deportation, or attacks by the Nazis.

Consistent adherents of a “Never Again!” policy – which assumes that what has happened in history, could again happen – would seek policies to help ensure that it does not indeed occur again.

That brings us back to Alfred Flatow. [The article provides a case study of Flatow, a Jewish veteran of the German army, who competed for Germany in the 1896 Olympics.] What if he – and an unknown number of other Germans, Jews and non-Jews alike – had not registered his firearms in 1932? Or if the Weimar Republic had not decreed firearm registration at all? What if the Nazis, when they took power in 1933 and disarmed social democrats and other political enemies, or when they decided to repress the entire Jewish population in 1938, did not have police records of registered firearm owners? Can it be said with certainty that no one, either individually or in groups small or large, would have resisted Nazi depredations?

One wonders what thoughts may have occurred to Alfred Flatow in 1942 when he was dying of starvation at the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Perhaps memories of the 1896 Olympics and of a better Germany flashed before his eyes. Did he have second thoughts, maybe repeated many times before, on whether he should have registered his revolver and two pocket pistols in 1932 as decreed by the Weimar Republic? Or whether he should have obediently surrendered them at a Berlin police station in 1938 as ordered by Nazi decree, only to be taken into Gestapo custody? We will never know, but it is difficult to imagine that he had no regrets.

72 Years Ago Today-> Kristallnacht “The Night of Broken Glass”

November 9, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

Kristallnacht also known as Night of Broken Glass was an anti-Jewish pogrom in Nazi Germany on November 9th-10th 1938. Kristallnacht was the day Hitler’s final solution “came out of the closet” It is viewed by many historians as the beginning of the final solution, leading towards the genocide of the Holocaust

In a coordinated attack on Jewish people and their property, 99 Jews were murdered and 25,000 to 30,000 were arrested and placed in concentration camps. 267 synagogues were destroyed and thousands of homes and businesses were ransacked. This was done by the Hitler Youth, Gestapo, and the SS. Kristallnacht also served as a pretext and a means for the wholesale confiscation of firearms from German Jews. Kristallnacht was part of a broader Nazi policy of antisemitism and persecution of the Jews. Kristallnacht was followed by further economic political persecutions and horrible genocide.

Throughout  the world we remember Kristallnach, the night the Nazi’s began the Holocaust in earnest. Its amazing how little has changed in almost seven decades. In Arab countries children textbooks are filled with anti Jewish hatred while others call them Moderates. Islamic Clerics throughout the world call for the death of Jews. In Venezuela and Iran leaders are whipping the population into Anti-Semitic fervor.

The Wiesenthal center has warned of major up tics in anti-Semitism in the UK, France and Greece. Polls have shown that a significant part of the world population believes that the Jews were behind 9/11.
Douglas Davis related this incident which occurred last year, not in 1938

At my dinner table on Friday night, a holocaust survivor admits that she is trying to persuade her son to take his family out of Europe to America, Canada, Australia, Canada, Australia, Israel…’They say they can’t leave me, but I tell them: “Go, get out. My parents left my grandparents behind in Berlin and brought me to safety in England. Now I want you to leave so that my grandchildren will be safe.”’ There is an unbearable desperation in her plea. But she has a point.

As tens of thousands of demonstrators march through the streets of Europe, the chants are modified but the message remains substantially intact: ‘Hamas, Hamas, Hamas — Jews to the Gas’. Or, more simply: ‘Death to the Jews’. Many European Jews, even well-established, affluent Jews, have been checking the suitcase they keep packed under the bed. They have been here before and many are (albeit reluctantly) reading the writing on the wall.

To some extent I thought I was inured. I grew up in postwar apartheid South Africa where a subtle undercurrent of anti-Semitism was a fact of everyday life. So while I was disturbed by manifestations of mob anti-Semitism, I was also less vulnerable to shock. That’s just how people are. Living in genteel, leafy Hampstead Garden Suburb provides an additional layer of protection from such crass outbursts.

But my sanguine state ends abruptly when I am out walking on Saturday. A hundred yards from my front door, I encounter the slogan, freshly painted in yellow, across the pavement: ‘Kill the Filthy Jews’. I am shocked. And shocked that I am shocked. The message is too close for comfort. The leafy gentility is, after all, an illusion.

Source:The terrible warning of a Holocaust survivor

Sadly Davis’ tale is not unique, mainstream politicians in the United States rail against the “Jewish influence on foreign policy” a meme take from Anti-Semitic texts, TV commentators complain about the number of Jews on the Supreme Court. College campus’ have become a safe haven for anti-Semitic professors.

Its sad how very little has changed in 72 years. The world is still a very dangerous place for Jews.
