People are campaigning to win Hasby Awards!

November 27, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

There have been hundreds of votes so far for the People’s Choice Hasby Awards, and the two front-runners are - almost suspiciously - European.

It appears that two sites,  drzz.info and Europe-Israel, have been asking their members to vote for the Museum of Modern Art protest they had organized.

There are a lot of votes also for Pilar Rahola’s essay, which didn’t make such big waves when it was first published. They might be coming from a Facebook campaign I have not yet found.

It’s great that the awards are getting international attention, even if they are skewing the results a bit. But I will certainly announce the Readers’ Choice awards along with the official Hasby Awards during my live appearance in New York on December 7!

Nominations Now Being Taken For The 2010 Hasby Awards-And Heare Elder of Ziyon In Person!

November 20, 2010 · Posted in The Capitol · Comment

Elder of Ziyon has announced the first annual Hasby Awards, which will be a feature of Elder of Ziyon’s talk at Yeshiva University on Israel Advocacy on December 7:

I was asked to speak to a group of students at Yeshiva University on the topic of Israel advocacy, and whatever else I feel like talking about. I like the idea, and the more I think about it the more I want to say.

I put together this blurb, which may or may not be accurate by the time I actually get up to speak:

Hasbara 2.0: What works and why

Elder of Ziyon is one of the world’s most influential pro-Israel bloggers. He has years of experience in writing original articles and analysis, spearheading research efforts and breaking literally hundreds of stories before the mainstream media. In addition, he has created multimedia pro-Israel products such as videos, song parodies, posters and T-shirts.

In his first public appearance, “The Elder” will critique existing Hasbara efforts - including his own - and unveil new Hasbara paradigms that will translate into much more effective approaches to pro-Israel activism. Within this framework, Elder will describe many specific ways that everyone can help Israel, both online and in the real world.

He promises it will be much less boring than this description makes it sound, or your money back!

I will try to accomplish the impossible: speak in public while remaining anonymous. And, no, I will not be wearing a mask.

Hopefully, the talk will be educational, entertaining and edifying.

The event is planned to take place at Yeshiva University, in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, on December 7 at 8 PM - the seventh night of Chanukah.

The organizers do not know how many people will show up, and neither do I, so if you think you might want to attend, just leave a comment or an email to me so I can give a better estimate and they can decide whether to reserve a stadium, lecture hall, classroom or closet. Once we know the actual venue I will of course publicize it.

Getting back to the Hasby Awards, the nominations for the best specific examples of hasbara for this year should be placed in the comments on the Elder of Ziyon site or emailed to him.

Nominations now being taken for the 2010 Hasby Awards!

The sponsors of my planned Hasbara 2.0 talk at Yeshiva University have been telling me that the turnout would be significantly higher if I speak on a weeknight, and if I go to the main YU campus rather than Stern College in midtown as I had hoped. Since my presentation is probably a one-time only deal, and I believe it is an important topic, I gave in. The new date is December 7, 2010 - “a date which will live in infamy” - at 8 PM, and I will shlep up to Washington Heights.

The sacrifices I make …. :-)

My presentation will introduce the 2010 Hasby Awards. Nominations for the best specific examples of hasbara for the year should be placed in the comments or emailed to me, and I will decide the winners.  After all, the best way to teach what works in defending Israel is by going through and analyzing specific examples of what works, and why.

Anyway, without further ado - start nominating!
