The Democrats’ are the anti-drilling party. There are exceptions-Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska comes to mind-but when you see a “D” after a congressman’s name-it almost never stands for drilling.

But a crack in the Dem curtain could be developing. My brother’s represesntative in Congress, Jim Himes (D-CT), may be open to more drilling in the United States, but with some reservations-no drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, for instance.

But hey, it’s a start. Ending Obama’s “permatorium”in the Gulf of Mexicon would be an even better start.

In addition to enduring high gasoline prices, many New Englanders warm their homes with heating oil.

Here’s a recent Jihad Watch headline:

Indonesia: Machete-wielding Muslim mob attacks Ahmadi Muslim “heretics,” murdering three

That was from February 6. And now authorities in Indonesia are claiming that the Ahmadis have “stirred up community conflicts.” This is exactly the same Islamic supremacist evasion of responsibility and tendency to blame the victim that we saw yesterday in Zawahiri’s blaming of the Copts for the jihad attacks against the Copts in Egypt.

Islamic Tolerance Alert from modern, moderate Indonesia: “Regional Indonesian Politicians to Ban Or Curb Ahmadiyah,” by Fitri, Eras Poke, Heru Andriyanto and Antara in the Jakarta Globe, February 26 (thanks to Twostellas):

Regional chiefs in some Indonesian provinces are moving ahead with plans to either ban completely or restrict the activities of Ahmadiyah followers in their areas, claiming the Muslim sect has stirred up community conflicts.

The mayor of Samarinda, Sjahrie Jaang, said he would curb all Ahmadiyah activities in the East Kalimantan capital and would also soon move to close down its mosques.

“The regulation on halting the activities of the Ahmadiyah was signed today,” he told reporters after a meeting with local police, religious leaders and community representatives on Friday.

He said he would meet with Ahmadiyah leaders in the area to enforce the regulation, advising them to halt their activities and close their houses of worship.

“This decision was taken as a form of firm action by the city administration on the Ahmadiyah issue in order to maintain security by preventing potential sources of conflict in society,” the mayor said.

When asked about the size of the Ahmadiyah community in Samarinda, Sjahrie said it was “insignificant” but if no firm action was taken immediately, it was likely to grow. “This is why we need to stop their activities now,” he said.

Representatives of the Indonesian Council of Ulema in Samarinda lauded the administration’s plans.

“The mayor’s decision is a relief to us all,” said Zaini Naim, the local chapter’s chairman. “This will stop the people from taking the law into their own hands.”

According to M. Faozal, a spokesman for West Nusa Tenggara’s provincial government, the governor was about to issue a bylaw that would outlaw the spread of Ahmadiyah teachings. “Ahmadiyah often triggers conflict in many regions, including West Nusa Tenggara,” the spokesman said on Friday. “The governor wants to prevent conflict; We’re calling on the Ahmadiyah to stop causing conflict.”

Limiting the Ahmadiyah community’s activities was necessary as a way to prevent potential conflicts, Faozal said, adding that the government hoped its followers would return to the “rightful path of Islam.”…

You know you want it. Some juicy detail from the Bailey book here; strange refusal of the Anchorage Police Department to investigate the National Enquirer's claims:

Officer Parker said that there is currently no plan of the Police Department to issue a “retraction” of the previous press release to clarify the “MINOR”  issues that were misstated in the previous press release.  There is currently also no plan to review the cell phones or computer in their possession to determine the names or identity of the phone numbers on the evidence in their possession.  Thus if there is evidence on the cell phone or computer in the possession of the police, of a connection between Todd Palin and Shailey Tripp, the Anchorage Police Department has no current plan to investigate  that connection.

Washington (CNN) -One of Chicago mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun’s opponents is urging her to withdraw from the contest citing what she terms her “volatility” and “insensitivity.”

This comes after the two women exchanged fiery words on Sunday - with the former senator accusing her opponent of previously being “strung out on crack.” Moseley Braun later apologized for the remarks.

But in a statement posted Wednesday on Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins’ website the candidate said: “Over the last few days, people across the city have shared their concerns about Carol Moseley Braun’s volatility and insensitivity to the lives and challenges of so many Chicago families. Today, with a host of supporters by my side, I have called for Carol to step out of this mayoral race.”

CNN reached out to Moseley Braun’s campaign but did not receive a response.

On Tuesday, Moseley Braun retreated from the comments that sparked the controversy. They were made to Pelt-Watkins at a weekend candidate forum - that did not include leading mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel - at a Chicago church on the city’s south side.

“I want to apologize to her, to the congregations and members of Trinity United Church and of New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist church and to all of the families and friends of those who are or who have been caught up in the tragedy of drug use,” Moseley Braun said to reporters in Chicago.

According to media reports Pelt-Watkins, who badly trails the other candidates, was initially more forgiving of Moseley Braun, saying on Tuesday: “Though I accept Carol’s media-issued apology, I believe she should seek sensitivity counseling and make restitution by volunteering at a recovery house as soon as possible. Carol’s reckless comments reveal her detachment from the experiences of the majority of Chicago families who just need a second chance.”

The episode began at the Sunday event after Pelt-Watkins accused Moseley Braun of being “missing in action” from the community for the past 20 years.

Visibly angered, Moseley Braun explained why, she felt, Pelt-Watkins was unaware of her service to Chicago.

“Patricia, the reason you didn’t now where I was the last 20 years is because you were strung out on crack,” said Moseley Braun. “I was not strung out on crack. I don’t have a record.”

In a recent interview with Chicago Magazine, Pelt-Watkins admitted having a problem with drugs as a teenager.

Voter will cast ballots in the Chicago mayor’s race on February 22.

From Ma’an:

Police in the Gaza Strip shut down a demonstration Monday in support of the uprising in Egypt.

Activists said six women and eight men were arrested at a park in Gaza City, where a few dozen demonstrators had gathered.

The women were released after a few hours. It was not immediately clear when the men were freed because they were separated, one of the protesters said.

Asmaa Al-Ghoul, a Gaza-based journalist and writer, was among those detained.

“Hamas police arrested me with group of demonstrators in Gaza in solidarity with Egyptian people,” she wrote on Twitter. “Women’s police beat me violently” and detained other young women.

They were standing in solidarity with the Egyptian uprising, Al-Ghoul added.

A day earlier, Palestinian Authority security forces shut down a demonstration in front of the Egyptian embassy in Ramallah, after calling in one of the organizers for questioning multiple times a day earlier.

Forces pushed demonstrators and a man who identified himself as a police commander said the demonstrators were in a “security area” and would have to disperse, they said.

The PA banned a similar demonstration in solidarity with the uprising in Tunisia last week.

From the inauspicious location of the Trinity United Church of Christ-yes, President Obama’s old church-former US Sen. Carol Mostly Clown, make that Carol Moseley Braun, referred to a minor candidate for mayor of Chicago-a position Braun is seeking-as a crack abuser. And would you believe that the target of Braun’s accusation, Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins, is a community organizer? Ya gotta love Chicago.

“Patricia, the reason you didn’t know who I was for the last 20 years is because you were strung out on crack,” Braun scolded. “I was not strung out on crack. I don’t have a record.”

Oh, Carol Mostly Clown certainly has a record-not a good one. As for Van Pelt Watkins, she admits to being a former marijuana and cocaine abuser, but she says she has been clean for 32 years. And crack cocaine didn’t exist 32 years ago.

Once upon a time. Ma’an News Agency tried to build for itself a niche as a professional, Western-style news outlet for Palestinian Arabs.

Then, after the Hamas takeover of Gaza, Ma’an started receiving threats from Hamas - and immediately it changed its coverage to stay away from anything negative about Hamas (unless Hamas denied a story from another source, in which case Ma’an would report the denial, but never the original story in context.)

Other Palestinian Arab journalists in Gaza were beaten and threatened not to report anything bad about Hamas, and for the most part, they obeyed.

Hamas kept a wary eye on Ma’an, occasionally paying “visits” to the agency to make sure that they were toeing the line.

That uneasy dance of Ma’an’s self-censorship and Hamas’ tolerance of the last Palestinian Arab media outlet in Gaza that was not explicitly pro-Hamas seems to have ended.

Palestine Times, a Hamas mouthpiece, just published an expose of sorts accusing Ma’an employees of Zionism,  belonging to Fatah, and of lying in stories about Hamas.

Just a guess, but I have a feeling that Ma’an’s days in Gaza are numbered.

At least the brutal winters we’ve been having in global warming’s conspicuous absence make for some fun sledding — except in New Jersey:

Lawsuits filed by injured sledders, it seems, have struck fear in the hearts of municipal and county government officials, prompting them to simply ban sledding at some of the state’s erstwhile sledding meccas. …[S]ome of the best sledding hills in the state sit snow covered and silent.

Sacrifices must be made, so that greedy lawyers and their clients may live like czars.

Tripp has now had a formal name-change and his last name is now Palin, not Johnston. I don't know about you, but I thought the official GOP line is that a child needs a mother and a father, even though Levi has obviously been deficient in that department (although breaking through the circled Palin wagons is no easy endeavor). Actually erasing the father from his son's own name is, well, Palinesque. Money quote from an "insider':

“Bristol wants to fully eliminate Levi from her life and Levi is making it easier than ever for her.”
