Pamela Geller has the details here of how Hamas-linked Islamic supremacist hate group CAIR is trying to get her dropped from hearings in Alaska tomorrow about anti-Sharia legislation. (CAIR doesn’t know who else is testifying, or they’d be sending out another flurry of lie-filled press releases.)

This is a group that consistently opposes anti-terror measures, has misrepresented the political and supremacist nature of Sharia in efforts to combat anti-Sharia legislation, and more. CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case — so named by the Justice Department. CAIR operatives have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups. Several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror. CAIR’s cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Honest Ibe Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements.

This is the group trying to dictate to Alaska legislators on their choice of speakers, and defaming a freedom fighter in the process. Free Americans should not let this unsavory Hamas-linked gang of thugs get away with this. Contact Rep. Gatto’s Chief of Staff Karen Sawyer to request that Pamela Geller be retained as a witness. E-Mail: [email protected], Copy to: [email protected], Tel: 907-465-5025

Please be polite and respectful, and thank Sawyer for allowing voices of truth and freedom to be heard. Urge her not to give in to this subversive Hamas front.

It seems that whenever Allen West holds a Town Hall meeting the controversial Muslim group CAIR is there.  The Council  for American-Islamic Relations’ supporters seem to have an endless supply of questions for West, and tonight’s townhall was no different.  Tuesday evening, a supporter of CAIR (notably wearing a “co-exist” t-shirt) began to question West’s knowledge about the Koran, and then proceeded to challenge West to a public debate.

Any chance you think that Congressman West was going to pass up on this opportunity?

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), asked Muammar Gaddafi to underwrite CAIR’s efforts in the United States during a September 2009 audience with the Libyan dictator.

According to an account of the meeting in a Libyan news website, Awad was joined by two other leading CAIR officials in praising Gaddafi’s leadership and asking him to help underwrite a program to distribute 1 million copies of the Quran to government officials and the general public in America and to help start up a new foundation Awad was trying to launch.

The account was published in Arabic by Libyalive.net, and was translated by the Investigative Project on Terrorism. Libyalive.net describes itself as “an independent Libyan electronic newspaper,” but the story about Gaddafi’s visit is attributed to the Jamahiriya News Agency, Libya’s official state news service.

Awad’s pleas to Gaddafi’s generosity came after the Libyan leader left United Nations observers slack jawed at his rambling, 100-minute speech to the General Assembly.

Now, after Gaddafi started killing his own people as he tries to fend off a popular uprising, Awad and CAIR have denounced him as a madman. They have organized rallies and news conferences demanding that violence against Libyan civilians by Gaddafi’s forces stop.

“Join us to support the people of Libya against a dictatorship,” a February 24 release from CAIR’s Chicago chapter said.

Concerns over the Libyan government were overlooked in September 2009, when Gaddafi traveled to New York to speak to the U.N. There, Gaddafi ignored the 15-minute limit on speeches, going on a tirade about everything from the assassinations of Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy to his belief that the U.N. Security Council was similar to al-Qaida, calling it the “terror council.”

At a later reception with Gaddafi, Awad, national spokesman Ibrahim Hooper and Chairman Larry Shaw made a direct appeal to the Libyan leader to donate to CAIR programs.

“Your speech has had an impact in the hearts of many people in the world,” Awad said. He hailed Gaddafi as “the world Islamic popular leader,” saying “[w]e appreciate your efforts over the years, and wish also to extend your interest will extend to Muslims in America, God willing.”

In addition to the Quran program, Awad asked for money to help launch the Muslim Peace Foundation. That group would work to “have an active role in American life so that we can repair the relationship [with the Muslim world] and restore it to what it should be,” Awad said.

The foundation was created in May 2008, corporate records filed in Washington, D.C. show. Officers include Shaw and Awad, who is listed as Nehad Hammad. Awad also used the name Nehad Hammad in CAIR’s founding articles of incorporation in 1994. During a 2003 deposition in a civil lawsuit, Awad acknowledged his “full and complete name is Nihad Awad Hammad.”

A third Muslim Peace Foundation founder is listed as Winslow Seale. That is the name of Dar al-Hijrah mosque outreach director Johari Abdul Malik before his conversion to Islam. Records from the Department of Homeland Security obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show that Dar al-Hijrah is considered “associated with Islamic extremists” and “has been linked to numerous individuals linked to terrorism financing.”

“We hope for your noble generosity in taking this project under your wing,” Awad told Gaddafi, “so you will be in the vanguard, as we have come to expect of you….God willing, you will as you have promised us, be the first to take the lead in this project.”

In a radio interview Monday, Awad said the pitch came up empty. Because the request failed, he claimed, CAIR officials did no wrong soliciting Gaddafi.

“But we always hold our views on the principles of justice and human dignity very straight,” Awad said on WPFW radio in Washington, D.C. “We never received a penny from his group, from his government. And in fact when he started abusing and killing civilians we condemned him and we support the international community’s effort to restore justice and peace to Libya by protecting civilians. We’re very, very principled when it comes to these matters.”

The United States and other Western governments were not as principled, Awad said. “We should not wait until these regimes collapse so that we stand with the people who have been oppressed by these people … Our foreign policy has to be aligned with our values, the values of equality, justice, freedom and all these things that we always try to spread around the world and democracy. So when we see an oppressive dictator persecuting his people, killing his people, if this is on the news we speak up. But if it’s not in the news we ignore it.”

Soliciting money from Gaddafi was not legal until 2007, when the United States removed Libya from its list of terror-sponsoring states. To get to that point, Gaddafi renounced terrorism, gave up his nuclear weapons program and compensated relatives of those killed on Pan Am Flight 103, which was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland in a Libyan plot.

But Gaddafi’s regime remained brutally repressive at home. The State Department’s report on Libya covering 2009 cited a poor human rights record. “Continuing problems included reported disappearances; torture; arbitrary arrest; lengthy pretrial and sometimes incommunicado detention; official impunity; and poor prison conditions,” it said. “Denial of fair public trial by an independent judiciary, political prisoners and detainees, and the lack of judicial recourse for alleged human rights violations were also problems.”

CAIR officials loudly condemn Gaddafi’s brutal response to the popular uprising against his regime. “Mr. Gadhafi is nothing short of a madman like those who came before him, like Mussolini and Hitler,” said Dawud Walid, the head of CAIR’s Michigan office.

“The Obama administration,” Walid told a reporter, “needs to cut diplomatic ties [with] all of these dictators in the Muslim Arab world and to stop propping up these dictators.”

But the solicitation to Gaddafi was not CAIR’s only attempt at significant foreign funding from Muslim autocrats. Though its website continues to say that allegations that “CAIR receives foreign money” is “Internet Disinformation,” the organization sent delegations to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in 2006 seeking millions of dollars in donations from wealthy Gulf donors.

State Department records show Awad, Hooper and Shaw were part of those delegations. One cable, obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, said the group admitted it was in Saudi Arabia “to solicit $ 50 million in governmental and non-governmental contributions.”

Though a U.S. ally, Saudi Arabia’s human rights record under the Al Saud dynasty draws frequent criticism. The State Department’s report for 2009 listed “torture and physical abuse; poor prison and detention center conditions; arbitrary arrest and incommunicado detention; denial of public trials and lack of due process in the judicial system; political prisoners; restrictions on civil liberties such as freedoms of speech (including the Internet), assembly, association, movement, and severe restrictions on religious freedom; and corruption and lack of government transparency. Violence against women, violations of the rights of children, and discrimination on the basis of gender, religion, sect, and ethnicity were common.”

It’s unclear how much money the trip generated. Nothing in the State Department cable indicated that CAIR officials planned to challenge Saudi human rights policies.

Likewise, they opted not to do so with Gaddafi in 2009. “We have felt for years pride and glory in your leadership and your continuing efforts for world peace, and pray and beseech God Almighty to preserve you and bless your efforts and your country,” Shaw, a longtime North Carolina state senator, told Gaddafi.

“We want to assure you that Muslims in America are your brothers and supporters,” Shaw said. “They share with you your interests and aspirations.”

The four pieces of evidence the government relies on, as discussed below, do create at least a prima facie case as to CAIR’s involvement in a conspiracy to support Hamas; however, even if the proverbial “cat was let out of the bag” at trial, there is an ongoing injury that will persist as long as the public has ready access to the Government’s list of unindicted co-conspirators.
U.S. District Court Judge Jorge Solis, July 1, 2009

Not if Valerie Jarrett has anything to say about it!

The Daily Caller writes that senior advisor and assistant to Obama, Valerie Jarrett, thanked CAIR publicly for doing such a great job:

White House officials have applauded advocacy efforts by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, even though top FBI managers refuse to meet its leaders, the council has been judged by courts to have been associated with the Islamic terror group Hamas, and several of its employees and members have been jailed or expelled for jihadi-related terrorist offenses since 2001.

CAIR was publicly applauded at a Mar. 10 White House event by Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor and assistant to the president for intergovernmental affairs and public engagement, for its work with MTV to counter “bullying.” “Bullying can be prevented if we all take action,” said Jarrett, as she cited the MTV project, and named CAIR as a partner.

Apparently, Jarret thinks that one way of handling bullying is to associate with the bullies-

“There’s no controversy,” said Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR’s press secretary. To advance CAIR’s causes, including “cyber-bullying,” he said, “we do what we think is necessary…what other people do is up to them.” [emphasis added]

Very reassuring.

This is the same CAIR that is famously known as the unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land trial-

where evidence showed that the most prominent Muslim advocacy groups in the United States had associations with Hamas, which is the Palestinian branch of the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood. The tied groups include the Islamic Society of North America, which is an umbrella organization for many Muslim groups, and the North American Islamic Trust, which owns the titles to many U.S. mosques. “The government has produced ample evidence to establish the associations of CAIR, ISNA, NAIT, with NAIT, the Islamic Association for Palestine, and with Hamas,” Judge Jorge Solis said in a July 2009 ruling.

CAIR is connected with Hamas through its director, Nihad Awad, who was a co-founder in 1994 of the Islamic Association for Palestine. Documents subsequently presented in court by the federal government showed the IAP was the U.S. propaganda and advocacy arm of Hamas, according to data provided by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, founded by journalist Steve Emerson. In turn, the IAP was one element of a larger circle of organizations founded by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

You can view a copy of Judge Solis’s ruling here.

All this of course is meaningless to the Obama administration.

Apparently with all the unrest in the Middle East, the Obama administration is finished kowtowing to Muslim dictators there and is now concentrating on honoring the local variety.

CAIR’s ties to Hamas are “ongoing,” say the feds. Yet the mainstream media keeps going to that amiable stomach-stapled beekeeper, Honest Ibe Hooper, as if he really were the spokesman for a civil rights organization. It would rather like CBS interviewing Josef Goebbels and identifying him as a “civil rights activist” in a 1942 broadcast.

“FBI chief confirms ties cut with U.S. Muslim group: Agency bans outreach due to terrorist links,” from WorldNetDaily, March 18 (thanks to all who sent this in):

In stunning testimony on Capitol Hill, the head of the FBI explained his agency has cut off ties to the most influential Muslim organization in America due to concerns over its leaders’ association with terrorism.

Since the Justice Department linked the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations to a 2008 terror-finance case, the FBI has refused to work directly with the group’s national office or any of its 30-plus chapters across the country.

Wednesday’s hearing held by the House Judiciary Committee marked the first time FBI Director Robert Mueller has narrowed down the cause of concern to CAIR’s “national leadership.”

“We have no formal relationship with CAIR because of concerns with regard to the national leadership,” Mueller testified.

CAIR’s current executive director is Nihad Awad.

Wiretap evidence from the Holy Land Foundation terror-finance case put Awad at a Philadelphia meeting of Hamas leaders that was secretly recorded by the FBI. Participants hatched a plot to disguise payments to Hamas terrorists as charity. Wiretaps also record them stating the need to deceive Americans about their true aims.

The secret meeting, held in the 1990s at a Courtyard by Marriott hotel, was called to order by CAIR founding chairman Omar Ahmad. Both he and Awad launched CAIR not long after the meeting.

Mueller acknowledged the wiretap evidence during the House Judiciary Committee hearing.

The Justice Department designated Ahmad and CAIR as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land trial, the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history. A federal jury convicted Holy Land’s leaders on all 108 counts.

Ahmad stepped down from CAIR’s board of directors shortly after his federal designation.

Among other evidence collected by the FBI, the names of both Ahmad and Awad – who remains at CAIR’s helm and regularly appears on Fox News and other media – appear in a secret phone book alongside key Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk, whom the government says directed and coordinated Hamas terrorist attacks on civilians in Israel. Hamas also has murdered more than 17 Americans and has been listed as a U.S.-designated terror group since the 1990s.

During the Holy Land trial, U.S. prosecutors alleged that CAIR’s ties to Hamas are “ongoing.” In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI Assistant Director Richard Power suggested Ahmad and Awad remain under federal scrutiny….

This month, for the first time, both the Associated Press and Washington Post published stories confirming CAIR’s links to terrorism and its federal designation as an unindicted co-conspirator…..

On this the FBI is far more realistic and open-eyed than the White House. What a surprise. More on this story. “Hamas-associated CAIR applauded by White House,” by Neil Munro in The Daily Caller, March 18 (thanks to Mackie):

White House officials have applauded advocacy efforts by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, even though top FBI managers refuse to meet its leaders, the council has been judged by courts to have been associated with the Islamic terror group Hamas, and several of its employees and members have been jailed or expelled for jihadi-related terrorist offenses since 2001.

After lauding the National Education Association, Cartoon Network and a litany of other Democratic-affiliated advocacy groups and companies that are part of the White House’s “anti-bullying” campaign to reshape children’s opinions, Jarrett thanked MTV for “launching a new coalition that will work to fight bullying and intolerance online.” The coalition partners include the Hispanic advocacy group, “the National Council of La Raza, the Anti-Defamation League, and the [Council on] American-Islamic Relations, GLAAD and many others,” Jarrett said.

“There’s no controversy,” said Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR’s press secretary. To advance CAIR’s causes, including “cyber-bullying,” he said, “we do what we think is necessary…what other people do is up to them.”…

“…and if they cross us, we will destroy them,” he might have added under his breath.

Like many other activists in the White House’s campaign, Hooper conflated physical bullying and intimidation with routine spoken and online criticism of ideas and behavior, and suggested that CAIR’s critics were violent. “There’s a cottage industry of ‘Muslim-bashers’ who seek on a daily basis to marginalize American Muslims and to demonize Islam,” said Hooper.

Honest Ibe Hooper must know that the ones who are actually demonizing Muslims are people like Khalid Aldawsari, the would-be jihad mass murderer in Lubbock, Texas; Muhammad Hussain, the would-be jihad bomber in Baltimore; Mohamed Mohamud, the would-be jihad bomber in Portland; Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood jihad mass-murderer; Faisal Shahzad, the would-be Times Square jihad mass-murderer; Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, the Arkansas military recruiting station jihad murderer; Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the would-be Christmas airplane jihad bomber; and so many other jihad murderers and would-be murderers who justify their murders by reference to the texts and teachings of Islam. They demonize Muslims far more effectively than anything any non-Muslim, no matter how genuinely hateful, could ever possibly accomplish.

The ‘-basher’ phrase was first used by gay-advocates to tar their critics as violent, and is now routinely used by Hooper and other Islamist advocates to portray their critics as violent. ‘Muslim-basher,’ Hooper said, is “colloquial American-English for someone who rhetorically bashes Muslims.”

When asked about CAIR’s view of Hamas, Hooper sent a statement saying “we unequivocally condemn all acts of terrorism, whether carried out by al-Qa’ida, the Real IRA, FARC, Hamas, ETA, or any other group.” However, CAIR’s statement is ambiguous because Islamists describe Israeli military operations as “terrorism” and their attacks on Israeli civilians as justified “resistance” or “jihad.”

Good on you for noticing that, Munro.

From Accuracy in Media’s Cliff Kincaid:

With much of the world in shock over the brutal Palestinian murders of five members of an Israeli family, the Al-Jazeera Forum [1] in Doha, Qatar featured Osama Hamdan, a top member of the political bureau of Hamas, a group that considers Israeli settlers and civilians legitimate military targets.

Americans attending this event included Steve Clemons [2] of the George Soros-funded New America Foundation. He has been a cheerleader for Al-Jazeera and his blog [4] features a “Watch Al-Jazeera Now” ad. He reports [5] that he was at the Al-Jazeera Forum as a “guest” of Al-Jazeera, apparently meaning that the terror channel paid his way and accommodations.

The U.S. State Department designates [6] Hamas as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” and states that it “was formed in late 1987 as an outgrowth of the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Hamdan was on a panel with former Obama adviser Robert Malley of the George Soros-funded International Crisis Group. The title of the panel was, “Palestinian national strategy in the new Middle East.”

Another American participant in the Al-Jazeera Forum was Ahmed Rehab [7], executive director of the Chicago Office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim Brotherhood spin-off.

A report on the event noted [9] that several speakers declared that “the fall of dictatorial regimes that were allies of the US and Israel could motivate the Arab streets to strengthen calls for liberation of Palestine …” The phrase, “liberation of Palestine,” is a euphemism for the destruction of the state of Israel.

This is not the first time that the channel has given Hamdan a platform. Al-Jazeera’s Andrew Wander interviewed the Hamas leader [11] at a previous Al-Jazeera Forum so that he could define Palestinian “resistance.” He described how civilians, in addition to Israeli soldiers, become terrorist targets. He expressed no regret over this.

“They are not supposed to be there,” he said, referring to the civilians. He went on to say that Israeli settlers “are not considered civilians,” implying they are legitimate military targets. Indeed, in the past, Hamas has taken responsibility [12] for killing Israeli settlers.

The Hamdan comment takes on more significance in view of the brutal murder of five members of the Fogel family in the Israeli West Bank settlement of Itamar. The victims were two parents and three of their children. However, Hamas has denied responsibility [13] for these murders.

Asked in the Al-Jazeera interview what it means to “liberate” Palestine, Hamdan quoted from a letter of President Obama and declared that “all Palestine belongs to the Palestinians.” On the other hand, he said, the Jews in Israel trace their homeland to places like Poland, Russia, and Eastern Europe.

Al-Jazeera’s strong identification with this terrorist group is not something that gets a lot of media attention at a time when the channel is striving to get more carriage by U.S. cable and satellite systems.

But two years ago the network published an interview [20] with the author of several books on Hamas who said “the Islamic movement will come out victorious” in its war with Israel.

Dr. Judea Pearl, father of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, told me, “In the past four years I have been watching Al-Jazeera carefully, through direct translation from their Arabic station, and I am sorry to state that the network has been shifting steadily from a posture of moderation and coexistence to a total and open alignment with the most extreme elements of the Arab world, including Hamas and Hezbollah.”

His son’s murderer, 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, boasted of his murder, saying that he “decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head.”

In a statement [21], Pearl added, “Al Jazeera’s popularity and general acceptance in the West has emboldened its management to take an even harder anti-Western stance. Their glorification of child-killer Samir Kuntar, and their leaking of the so-called Al-Jazeera Palestine Papers in January of 2011, aimed to destroy the credibility of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and to end all hopes for [a] negotiated Mideast settlement are two of many steps attesting [to] their aims and tactics.”

Pearl went on, “Their [Al-Jazeera’s] unconditional support of Hamas’s terror in Gaza, the Hezbollah takeover in Lebanon, and the Syrian and Iranian regimes betrays any illusion that democracy and human rights are on Al-Jazeera’s agenda—weakening the West is their first priority.

“Al-Jazeera is an anti-Western propaganda machine that also engages in news services for profit and status.

“I am deeply concerned about the consequences of further empowering Al-Jazeera’s management with acceptance, which would reinforce their illusion that we are blind to their aims and tactics.”

A search of the Al-Jazeera website [22] finds no story about the massacre of the Fogel family in Israel or photographs of the carnage.  Israeli officials released the photographs [23] of the victims in an effort to demonstrate the brutality of the terrorists waging war on Israel.

Pamela Geller and I were on Fox Business’s “Follow the Money” tonight, discussing the Peter King hearings. First I “debated” a spokesperson for Hamas-linked CAIR, Christina Abraham, who was following Muhammad’s “war is deceit” principle, and then Pamela appeared on Bolling’s panel refuting politically correct falsehoods. She comments on the proceedings here.

Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-MN) continued on the theme that Reps. Peter King (R-NY) Frank Wolf (R-VA) started on earlier today at King’s hearings on the “Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community’s Response” by attacking the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

But Cravaack upped the rhetorical ante a bit, referring to CAIR as “basically… a terrorist organization” and asking Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy Baca — hypothetically — if he would continue to work with CAIR if “knew that CAIR was a terrorist organization sponsored by Hamas.”

“Let me answer this way,” Baca said in response to the accusations, “if the FBI has something to charge CAIR with, bring those charges forward and try them in court and deal with it that way.”

“There is a reality that in my culture as a police officer that you have facts and you have a crime, deal with it,” said Baca, who was called as a witness by Democrats on the committee.

“We don’t play around with criminals in my world,” Baca said. “If CAIR is an organization that’s a, quote, ‘criminal organization,’ prosecute them, hold them accountable, and bring them to trial.”

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) went after the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) at the Homeland Security Committee’s hearing on Muslim radicalization on Thursday.

“Let me be clear, CAIR is counterproductive and it is hurting the American Muslim community,” Wolf said. “I raise the concerns because if we are to successfully counter radical terrorism, law enforcement will need the active engagement of the Muslim communities.”

“Last week during a hearing before my subcommittee, Attorney General Eric Holder recognized CAIR’s troubled history, he said, and the FBI director has suspended all noninvestigative cooperation with CAIR,” Wolf said.

“My concern is not limited to its disturbing origins and connections to terrorist finances,” Wolf said. “I’m equally concerned about it’s role attacking the reputation of any who dare to raise concerns about domestic radicalization.”

King said that “responsible Muslim American leaders” must reject CAIR.

“In the lead up to this hearing, I found it shocking and sad that the mainstream media accepted CAIR’s accusations as if it were a legitimate organization,” King said.

Emerson observes: “The real underlying story here is how the self-anointed leadership of the Muslim community … are the ones responsible for instilling panic into the Muslim community by suggesting that these hearings will lead to ‘hate crimes’ against Muslims.”

That has indeed become the preferred tactic in recent years: deflecting attention by appropriating victim status from actual or intended victims of jihadist terrorism, and attempting to silence the discussion by acting as though any portrayal of Islam in even a potentially negative light amounts to inciting hate crimes.

There is one small cause for optimism: the prospect that groups like CAIR have shown themselves to be so paranoid and obnoxious in their denunciation of King’s hearings, that more people are noticing, and wondering if perhaps they doth protest too much.

“Muslim American groups, not Rep. Pete King, are the ones fomenting hysteria with hearings on tap,” by Steven Emerson for the New York Daily News, March 10:

Never in my entire career in Washington have I encountered the hype and scare tactics of those opposing the hearings into Islamic radicalization by Rep. Pete King. A classic example was a headline on MSNBC.com: “Inquiry by congressional committee looks like inquisition to many Muslims.”

“Witch hunt” and “McCarthyism” have also popped up.

The line of attack is now familiar: If King (R-L.I.) were truly interested in violent extremism, his hearings would focus on a wide range of groups that wreak havoc on America, including neo-Nazis and others; by focusing solely on Muslim extremism, the argument goes, he is betraying his bias.

This is utterly ridiculous. Our organization, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, recently did an analysis of all terrorism convictions based on statistics released by the Justice Department. These stats show that more than 80% of all convictions tied to international terrorist groups and homegrown terrorism since 9/11 involve defendants driven by a radical Islamist agenda. Though Muslims represent less than 1% of the American population, they constitute defendants in 186 of the 228 cases the Justice Department lists.

The figures confirm that there is a disproportionate problem of Islamic militancy and terrorism among the American Muslim population.

This is not to say that, on a percentage basis, American Muslims tend to be violent or extremist. To the contrary. Those involved in terrorism are a tiny sliver of the overall Muslim American population.

But one ought to be able to focus on a very real problem - homegrown terrorism fueled by Muslim extremism - without being accused of painting the entire U.S. Muslim population with a broad brush.

The real underlying story here is how the self-anointed leadership of the Muslim community - groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America and the Muslim American Society - are the ones responsible for instilling panic into the Muslim community by suggesting that these hearings will lead to “hate crimes” against Muslims.

That canard has been used by these groups for years in their attempts to intimidate the media, commentators and critics of radical Islam from truly analyzing the role of these groups and others in radicalizing their constituents in the American Muslim community. The documents showing the creation of these groups with the assistance of the Muslim Brotherhood were introduced into evidence in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development several years ago. At the trial, the Council on American-Islamic Relations was described by an FBI expert as a front for Hamas, and was also listed, together with the Islamic Society of North America, as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation indictments.

Groups such as these routinely play the “Islamophobia” card, and get attention for doing so in the mainstream media, in order to silence criticism of Islamic radicalism. In fact, these very same groups, just like the Obama administration, categorically refuse to even use the term “radical Islam” in order to excise the term from the American vernacular.

Critics have taken issue with King’s focus on one religious minority. But, in fact, in previous years, Congress has held numerous hearings into various ethnic subcultures that have spawned illegalities - including the Italian mob, Hispanic drug cartels, black and white prison gangs, white racists and neo-Nazis.

Headlines about King producing “panic” in the rank-and-file Muslim community are nonsense. The only panic is that being strategically fomented by groups with an interest in spreading fear. They, together with their mainstream media friends, have falsely alleged that: one, there is a war against Islam by the United States, and two, the FBI is secretly instigating Islamic terrorism by use of informants.

These are dangerous fictions.
