Video: Israeli Sharks Attack-A Short Review Of Mossad Agents

I’ve quoted before from Robert E. Belgrad, who writes about the history of Israel being accused of training animals against the Muslim world:

  • Just last week, shark attacks near Sharm el-Sheikh, have been blamed on Israel-possibly the Mossad using them as a biological weapon to harm Egypt’s tourist trade.
  • In August 2010, Iran accused Israel of using pigeons to spy on her uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.
  • In June of 2009, Israel was accused by the Palestinian Authority media of usingwild boars in an engineered attack to destroy Arab crops in Samaria.
  • In 2008, Dr. Hasan Khater, secretary-general of the Islamic-Christian Front in Jerusalem, accused Israel of using poison-resistant rats to drive Arab residents of Jerusalem from their homes.
  • In 2007, Iranian intelligence services arrested 14 squirrels who were suspected of conducting espionage within Iran’s borders.
  • On the other hand, Israel has used antelope to defend against Iran’s Hezbollah proxy force in Lebanon-and has also experimented with the use of llamas. However, the experiments failed during the last war in Lebanon, when the llamas seemed to show greater loyalty to “The Party of God” than to Israel.
With that in mind, here is a video update of the nefarious critters recruited by the Mossad:

Nazi Dressing Alleged Jihadist Charged With Biting Two FBI Agents

Emerson Begolly, a 21-year-old Penn State student who allegedly expressed pro-jihad and anti-Semitic sentiments, was arrested in the parking lot of a Burger King in Pennsylvania last week after he allegedly went for a gun in his pocket and then bit two FBI agents when they tried to question him about his online activities.

But a closer look at Begolly’s case and his personal background suggests that the pro-jihad and anti-Semitic remarks which brought him to the attention of law enforcement may be the product of a troubled past. And while his personal political beliefs appear to have been radicalized following what his mother described as a “breakdown” last month, his lawyer argued that there’s no indication he had the intent — or the means — to wage any sort of attack.

Begolly, who posted photos of himself dressed up as a Nazi on his MySpace page and more recently uploaded a song praising a suicide bomber on a jihadist web forum, reportedly has Asperger’s syndrome, a disorder in the autism spectrum characterized by difficulties with social interaction, according to his lawyer and members of his family. Joan Kowalski, Begolly’s mother, told FBI agents that Begolly had been off his medication for two years and that he suffered what she called a meltdown in December and withdrew from classes, an FBI agent testified. Since then, she said, he’s spent most of his time online and on chat sites but also took long walks with a firearm according to an FBI agent’s testimony.

Kowalski tried to have Begolly committed to psychiatric hospitals earlier last week, but the staff said that there was no room, an FBI agent testified. The defendant’s younger brother also allegedly told FBI agents his brother talked about wanting to die as a martyr and talked about obtaining virgins after he died, an FBI agent testified in court on Thursday.

Kowalski — who lured Begolly to the Burger King so that the FBI agents could talk to him by telling him that his grandmother was dying, a revelation that prompted her son to dub her “Judas” — is an alcoholic who is under psychiatric treatment for excessive compulsive disorder, a federal defender for Begolly alleged in court last week.

His mother told FBI agents that Begolly’s father (shown here) sparked her son’s interest in Nazism, encouraged him not to take his medication and stocked up on weapons, and FBI agent testified. Photos of Begolly in a Nazi uniform were taken by his father, Shawn Begolly, when the younger Begolly was approximately 11 or 12 years old, his mother allegedly told FBI agents.

Kowalski also told FBI agents that her son had a passport and expressed an interest in traveling to Chechnya to become a martyr and had an AK-47, according to an FBI agent. Begolly’s stepmother reportedly told the FBI that he wrote poems about causing harm to Jews.

Little information can be found on on Begolly’s past political activity or whether he has a long history of radicalism. What can be found is unremarkable: A Jan. 1, 2009 story by the Penn State newspaper says Begolly attended a peaceful pro-Palestinian rally at Penn State’s main campus in State College (pictured above).

His arrest unfolded on Tuesday morning when Begolly was sitting in a car in the Burger King parking lot in New Bethlehem, a city north of Pittsburgh. According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Begolly was the subject of a criminal investigation and “agents had reason to believe he might be armed.”

Kowalski (who according to Begolly’s lawyer told her son she was getting an iced tea) went inside the restaurant as Begolly sat in the front passenger seat wearing a military flack jacket, an FBI agent testified (according to a court transcript of a proceeding on Thursday obtained by TPM).

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Michael Christman testified that when two FBI agents opened both passenger side car doors and identified themselves, Begolly tried to reach in his pocket, which agents later found contained a gun. One of the FBI agents “physically entered the car with his back to the vehicle’s dashboard and, for lack of a better word proceeded to wrestle with the Defendant while to pin his right arm against his body to avoid access front jacket pocket,” Christman testified.

After handcuffing Begolly, the FBI agents patted him down and, in the pocket he was allegedly trying to access, found a fully loaded 9 millimeter Makarov handgun with the safety off according to the criminal complaint and testimony in court. They also discovered two fully loaded magazines in his pocket, the government said. The two FBI agents noticed they had bite wounds on their hands and were bleeding; they subsequently put Band-aids on their hands and received tetanus shots as a result of the bites, Christman testified.

Marketa Sims, a public defender appointed for Begolly, objected to the introduction of several pieces of evidence submitted into the record, including an militant chant allegedly authored by Begolly under the alleged alias Alshashedi (posted here). She argued that Begolly, who doesn’t have a driver’s license, has a “history of being an oddball” but is dependent upon the support of his father.

His father, who owns about 20 weapons that were seized by the FBI when they searched his home on his farm following Begolly’s arrest, testified on Thursday in favor of his son being released into his custody and said he would agree not to have weapons at the home if his son was there.

“I have mostly hunting rifles. I live in rural PA, ma’am, and we cling to Bibles and guns up there,” the elder Begolly, who said he teaches computer classes at Penn State’s continuing education division, testified.

“I have been hunting since I was 12 years old. So I have some shotguns, some rifles, and I also have some handguns,” Begolly said. “We have bear, coyotes, all kind of dangerous critters.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret E. Picking argued that Begolly should be detained because he “is similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” — explosive one moment, and docile the next.

“Ms. Sims described the Defendant, Emerson Begolly, as just an oddball, an eccentric, a loner,” federal prosecutor Picking said in response. “Your Honor, on behalf of the Government, I am not prepared to stake my safety or the safety of the community on Ms. Sims’ representations to the Court that this Defendant is just an oddball, just a loner.”

The federal judge ruled Thursday that Begolly could be released on $ 25,000 bail on the condition he surrender his passport and stay at a halfway house in the city. But the government asked a judge not to release Begolly until Friday so they could file an appeal, and a judge agreed.

In a filing on Friday, U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton requested that the district court “enter an emergency order staying the defendant’s release until the appeal of the release order can be considered by the District Court.”

The judge granted the government’s motion to hold him pending formal appeal of decision to release to halfway house on Friday.

Dental jihad: Neo-Nazi who became jihadist bites FBI agents who attempted to question him

Emerson Begolly, who calls himself Asadullah Alshishani, apparently decided to exchange one tradition of antisemitism for a much older and more established one. When it is not railing against Jews and other non-Muslims, the Qur’an commands jihadists to strike at the necks of unbelievers in battle (47:4). But sometimes, in a pinch, a mujahid’s gotta improvise. “Nazi Buff Turned Jihadi Allegedly Bites FBI Agents, ” by Hanna Siegel for ABCNews, January 6:

A Pennsylvania man who has posted jihadi songs and pictures of himself in Nazi garb online allegedly bit two FBI agents and reached for a loaded gun when the agents attempted to question him.

Emerson Begolly, 21, was sitting alone in his car in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in New Bethlehem, north of Pittsburgh, on Tuesday morning when he was approached by the agents. According to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday, Begolly was “a subject of a criminal investigation” and “agents had reason to believe he might be armed.”

When the agents opened the doors of Begolly’s car, according to the complaint, he allegedly “screamed immediately and reached toward his jacket.” The agents thought he was reaching for a firearm and during the ensuing struggle Begolly allegedly bit both of them, drawing blood. A loaded 9 millimeter handgun was found in his jacket, according to the complaint.

Begolly, whose listed address is in Harrison, Pennsylvania, is being charged with assaulting FBI agents and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. Calls to the federal prosecutor’s office and the FBI office in Pittsburgh were not returned.

Begolly has posted jihadist songs and poetry online under the alias Asadullah Alshishani, including an original song on YouTube that pays tribute to Osama Bin Laden. “Amir of the Ansar” includes the lyrics “You fight AmeriKKKa/And terrorize the Jews/You slay the murtadeen/And blow up the Hindus.” According to the web site The Jawa Report, Begolly’s alter ego also posted a song that lauded the late Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and boasted “When the Jew’s blood reds my knife/Then my life is free from strife.”

In December, according to The Jawa Report, he posted a tribute to the suicide bomber who attempted to bomb downtown Stockholm on a jihadi web forum.

On his MySpace account, Begolly posted pictures of himself when younger dressed in a Nazi uniform. A more recent picture shows him with a beard and a knit skullcap.

Begolly was registered as an online student of Pennsylvania State University. The campus newspaper reported that Begolly attended a pro-Palestinian rally on campus in early 2009, and represented himself as a Chechen.

University spokeswoman Lisa Powers told ABC News that Begolly has been suspended as of Wednesday. “He will not be allowed on a Penn State campus as long as charges are pending against him,” said Powers, who also said she believed that school administrators had learned of law enforcement interest in Begolly just prior to the Christmas break. “University administrators were notified and have cooperated fully with law enforcement.” said Powers.

The ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, WTAE-TV, reported that at a detention hearing in federal court on Thursday afternoon, the FBI claimed that Begolly’s father had introduced him to Nazi beliefs and dressed him as a Nazi, and that Begolly’s mother had tried to have Begolly admitted for psychiatric care….

Israeli ‘Human Rights’ Groups Are Political Agents of Influence

On Sunday December 19, the self-proclaimed “Israeli human rights” group B’Tselem disseminated a shocking story to the local and international media. B’Tselem claimed that the previous day Palestinian shepherd Samir Bani Fadel was peacefully herding his sheep when he was set upon by a mob of Israeli settlers. He alleged that these kippah-clad Israelis drove up in a car and chased him away. Then they torched the pasture and burned 12 pregnant ewes alive and badly burned five others. B’Tselem furnished reporters with graphic photos of the dead sheep.

While the media published the account without a shred of suspicion, the police found Fadel’s account hard to believe. Observant Jews neither drive nor light fires on Saturdays.

And indeed, when questioned by police investigators, Fadel admitted he made the whole attack up. He accidentally killed his herd himself when he set fire to a pile of bramble. Too embarrassed to admit his mistake, he decided to blame the Jews and become a local hero. B’Tselem was only too happy to spread his lies.

On January 3, Channel 2 aired a video produced by B’Tselem. The video purported to show residents of Yitzhar — a community in Samaria - throwing rocks at Palestinians from the neighboring village Bureen for no reason whatsoever.  Channel 2 presented the footage as further proof - if anyone needed it — that the Israelis who live in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem are a bunch of lawless, hate-filled, violent fanatics.

Unfortunately for B’Tselem and Channel 2, Yitzhar residents also own a video camera. And they also filmed the event. The Samaria Regional Council released the video to the media on Tuesday.

The Yitzhar video exposes the B’Tselem video as a complete fraud. As it happened, on Monday afternoon a group of Palestinians joined by Israelis and/or foreigners descended on Yitzhar and attacked its residents with bricks and rocks of all sizes. Among the assailants was the cameraman who shot the footage presented on Channel 2. Not only did the videographer - who has blond hair - participate in the violent assault on Yitzhar. He staged the incident by alternately throwing rocks, filming, and directing his fellow attackers where to throw their rocks.

The Jews of Yitzhar only began throwing rocks to fend off their attackers.

This past Saturday the Palestinians’ invented what has all the trappings of a new blood libel against Israel.

Every Friday Israeli anti-Zionist activists, Palestinian Authority employees, and foreign anti-Israel groups join forces at Bil’in. Together they attack IDF soldiers guarding construction of the separation barrier adjacent to Bil’in village.

Saturday, the PA claimed that Jawaher Abu-Rahmeh, a woman from Bil’in died from tear gas inhalation at the previous day’s riot. The PA’s chief negotiator Saeb Erekat claimed that her death was an IDF war crime.

Erekat of course, has not distinguished himself as a paragon of truthfulness. To the contrary. He has a long track record of spreading lies about Israel on the international stage. In just one notable example, in April 2002, Erekat claimed in multiple television appearances that the IDF killed more than 500 people at Jenin refugee camp during Operation Defensive Shield. He also claimed that the IDF buried some 300 people in mass graves.

The UN later reported that during the pitched battle in Jenin refugee camp, 52 Palestinians were killed. 23 IDF soldiers were killed in the battle.

Despite Erekat’s rich history of lies, B’Tselem’s Executive Director Jessica Montell joined his bandwagon immediately. As NGO Monitor documented, in a Twitter post on Saturday, Montell wrote, “Sad start to the year. Jawaher Abu Rahmeh died this morning after inhaling tear gas yesterday in Bil’in demonstration.”

Her claim was echoed in similar statements from her fellow Israeli anti-Zionist pressure groups. Anarchists Against the Wall, Yesh Din, Gush Shalom, Physicians for Human Rights - Israel, and attorney Michel Sfard who is associated with Yesh Din, Al Haq and Breaking the Silence all alleged that the IDF murdered Abu Rahmah with tear gas.

As luck would have it though, eyewitnesses say that Abu Rahma didn’t even participate in the weekly riot. Ilham Abu Rahma, her 19 year old cousin and neighbor told Britain’s Independent that deceased was at home when the riot took place.

For its part, the IDF has reported that the medical information it received about Abu Rahma’s death are not consistent with death through overexposure to tear gas. During her hospitalization, Abu Rahma received an unusual mix of drugs that is usually only administered to treat poisoning, drug overdose or leukemia. The IDF also revealed that Abu Rahma had been recently hospitalized at a Palestinian hospital.

The easiest way to determine what caused Abu Rahma’s death would of course have been to perform an autopsy. The IDF asked for one to be performed. But the PA refused the request and instead buried her in record time.

THE SAD truth is that a case can easily be made that all of this might have been avoided if B’Tselem hadn’t taken it upon itself to delegitimize Israel’s right to self-defense. As part of its efforts, in 2002 B’Tselem spearheaded the international campaign against Israel’s right to build the separation fence to keep Palestinian suicide bombers out of its major cities.

As NGO Monitor’s recent in-depth report about the lawfare campaign to use the language of law to criminalize Israel shows, B’Tselem was the first NGO to launch a campaign against the security fence. It coined the draconian term, “The Wall” to define the barrier which is in most places nothing more than a wire fence. NGO Monitor recalls that in 2002 and 2003 B’Tselem “issued two lengthy position papers, which became accepted as the definitive analyses of ‘the Wall’ and were widely adopted.”

B’Tselem’s campaign against the security fence was quickly joined by other NGOs, the UN and the EU. Its allegations formed the basis of the international campaign to delegitimize Israel’s right to build the barrier.

That campaign reached a high point in 2004 with the publication of International Court of Justice’s opinion on the matter. The ICJ’s opinion parroted B’Tselem’s charge that Israel has no right to defend itself from Palestinian aggression. So too, the “evidence” against Israel’s right to defend itself submitted by the PLO was based largely on the two B’Tselem reports.

If B’Tselem hadn’t launched the campaign against the fence, it is possible that Israel’s decision to built it might have been greeted with the same indifference as the security fences erected by the likes of India, Spain and numerous other countries in disputed territories. That is, it might have been seen as the legitimate act of self-defense it is.

The central role that B’Tselem and its anti-Zionist comrades in the Israeli NGO community play in the international political war being waged against Israel’s right to exist first came under significant public scrutiny following the publication of the UN Human Rights Committee’s Goldstone report on Operation Cast Lead in 2009.

As NGO Monitor and the Zionist student movement Im Tirtzu demonstrated last year, B’Tselem and 15 other Israeli NGOs funded by the New Israel Fund and foreign governments lobbied the UN Human Rights Council to form the Goldstone Commission with the clear agenda of criminalizing Israel and whitewashing Hamas’s war crimes against the Jewish state.

Moreover, B’Tselem and its fellow-NIF grantees, provided 92 percent of the anti-Israel allegations originating from Israeli sources. These allegations - most of which were firmly denied by the IDF - were used by Judge Richard Goldstone and his colleagues to “prove” that Israel committed war crimes in prosecuting its campaign to protect southern Israel from Hamas’s illegal missile onslaught.

Not surprisingly, when scrutinized, like the story about the scorched pregnant ewes, the Yitzhar “bullies” and the “illegality” of the fence, these allegations came apart under scrutiny.

For instance, B’Tselem claimed that during Cast Lead the IDF killed 1,387 Gazans and only 330, or less than a quarter of them were combatants. As NGO Monitor notes, the Goldstone report’s claim that “Only one of every five [Gazan] casualties was a combatant,” clearly was based on B’Tselem’s numbers.

The IDF - which B’Tselem and its comrades claim has no credibility - reported that of 1166 Palestinian deaths, 709 were fighters killed in combat. Goldstone dismissed the IDF data.

Yet in November, Hamas’s “Interior Minister” Fathi Hamad admitted to the London-based Al Hayat newspaper that the IDF’s numbers were far more accurate than B’Tselem’s. According to Hamad, 600-700 Hamas fighters were killed in Cast Lead.

ONE OF the reasons that false stories by the likes of B’Tselem and its fellow Israeli-staffed anti-Zionist pressure groups are treated with respect by the local media and the international community alike is because they are perceived as Israeli groups. Why would Israelis lie about their own army?

Wednesday the Knesset voted to form a commission of inquiry to examine these groups’ sources of funding. The rationale behind this parliamentary investigation is clear. The time has come to determine just how “Israeli” these organizations that form such an integral part of the international political war against Israel actually are. How much of their funding comes from foreign governments? And if their foreign funding is significant, then how can they claim to be Israeli groups?

B’Tselem for instance receives funding from the British, Swiss, and Irish governments, Christian Aid, the Ford Foundation, DanChurchAid, (funded by the Danish Government), Diakonia, (funded by the Swedish and Norwegian governments and the EU), Trócaire, (funded by the Irish and UK governments),and others.

Yesh Din, which specializes in conducting domestic lawfare against the IDF is funded by the Irish, Dutch, British, German, and Norwegian governments, the EU, and George Soros’ Open Society Institute.

Physicians for Human Rights- Israel, Breaking the Silence, Bimkom, Peace Now, Gush Shalom, Adalah, the Geneva Initiative, the Committee for Peace and Security and so on and so forth all receive massive funding from foreign governments. The Samaria Regional Council alleges that over the past decade, foreign governments have donated hundreds of millions of euros, dollars and shekels to these Israeli “grassroots” groups.

The fact is that these groups’ claim to grassroots’ status is as credible as their allegations of Israeli criminality and Palestinian victimhood. In truth, these NGOs are local agents of foreign governments who use them to advance their anti-Israel policies.

The Knesset’s move to investigate these groups was greeted by righteous rage from the groups’ leaders and sympathetic Leftist Knesset members. The Knesset’s decision was castigated as “McCarthyite,” and “anti-democratic.” But it is clear these groups and their parliamentary allies doth protest too much.

No one is talking about shutting them down. But the Israeli public has a right to know what these groups really are. And our political representatives have an obligation to investigate and expose subversive foreign agents. Israel and Israel’s democratic system is weakened, not strengthened when the state’s international reputation and domestic discourse is hijacked by foreign governments who hide behind their Israeli foot soldiers.

Wikileaks: Iran used Red Crescent to send agents and weapons to Hezbollah

A heavily redacted memo in Wikileaks as presented by The Guardian shows that Iran has cynically used its Red Crescent to smuggle weapons -including missiles - and agents into Lebanon during the 2006 war as well as elsewhere.

8. (S) Per the IRC’s regulations, following his election in 2005, President Ahmadi-Nejad was able to appoint four members (out of 16) of the IRC management group. These four [NAMES REMOVED] were opposed to the IRC’s leadership and eventually requested its president, Dr. Ahmad Ali Noorbala, to resign. [DETAILS REMOVED] He did so in January 2006 [DETAILS REMOVED] Most of the incoming managers were members of the IRGC or the MOIS [Iranian Intelligence Agency]. [NAME REMOVED] said that pre-existing members now considered the IRC an agent of the IRGC. [Iranian Republican Guard]

9. (S) [NAME REMOVED] further elaborated on the presence of MOIS officials in the IRC and other government agencies. All government agencies include an MOIS representative [DETAILS REMOVED] [NAME REMOVED] Prior to Ahmadi-Nejad, the IRC official in this position was the sole MOIS representative; afterwards, [NAME REMOVED] said 40 officers at headquarters and 100 officers at the provincial officers came from the MOIS.

10. (S) [DETAILS REMOVED] in line with Ahmadinejad’s government-wide directive, that all employees pass a counterintelligence course. [NAME REMOVED] indicated that such a course violated the principles of the IRC because Red Cross/Red Crescent organizations are supposed to be independent from the state.

11. (S) In addition to the personnel moves, [DETAILS REMOVED] The IRC under Dr. Noorbala had resisted the IRGC’s request to take responsibility for relief and rescue operations. [DETAILS REMOVED] the IRGC’s Basij forces to assume responsibility for relief and rescue. [DETAILS REMOVED]

12.(S) In 2007, the IRC’s budget was granted an additional $ 200 million to acquire helicopters. The IRC, [DETAILS REMOVED] ordered 20 Russian MI-17 helicopters. Five of these were delivered to the IRC, the remaining 15 went to the IRGC. A similar helicopter order was planned for 2008. (Note: [NAME REMOVED] indicated that [NAME REMOVED] is the only Iranian entity allowed to import helicopters and that it is owned by the IRGC and MOIS.)

13.(S) [NAME REMOVED] has invested in three Iranian companies backed by the IRGC and Defense Ministry. The first, owned by the Defense Ministry, produces chemical weapons protective equipment; it had been defunct prior to the infusion of IRC funds. The second, owned by the IRGC, produces pre-fabricated military commands and mobile hospitals. The third, owned by the Defense Ministry, produces armored personnel carriers.

14.(C) Finally, the IRC [DETAILS REMOVED] began building health clinics in Karbala, Najaf, Hilla, Kazemayn, and Basra and awarded the construction contracts to IRGC companies, despite the IRC’s own staff of qualified engineers. [NAME REMOVED] said the clinics would be used for treatment but also as warehouses for military equipment or military bases if needed. He noted that the Iraqi Red Crescent and Iraqi Ministry of Health were not happy with this activity.

Facilitating IRGC Support to Hezbollah

————————————-

15. (S) The IRC again facilitated the entry of Qods force officers to Lebanon during the Israel-Hezbollah war in summer 2006. Although [NAME REMOVED] did not travel to Lebanon during the conflict, he reiterated that the only true IRC officers dispatched to Lebanon were [DETAILS REMOVED] all others were IRGC and MOIS officials. [NAME REMOVED] further said that the IRC shipments of medical supplies served also to facilitate weapons shipments. He said that IRC [DETAILS REMOVED] had seen missiles in the planes destined for Lebanon when delivering medical supplies to the plane. The plane was allegedly “half full” prior to the arrival of any medical supplies.

16. (S) [NAME REMOVED] also allowed the transfer of an IRC hospital in southern Lebanon to Hezbollah. [NAME REMOVED] said that Hassan Nasrallah had asked Supreme Leader Khamenei to allow Hezbollah to run the hospital during Dr. Noorbala’s tenure as IRC president. Although Khamenei acquiesced, Dr. Noorbala prevented the transfer until his own departure. The hospitaL [DETAILS REMOVED] is under Hezbollah control. [NAME REMOVED] is allegedly close to Nasrallah and is also trying to create a network of medical clinics in Lebanon.

17. (S) Comment: [NAMES REMOVED] are examples of figures nominally within the Iranian government establishment who have taken courageous stands against IRGC and MOIS incursions into Iranian governance. Such figures are key to our ability to understanding and countering the malign activities of these organizations regionally…

‘Eager Beaver’ FBI Agent’s Attempt To Flip Witness Exposed Feds’ Big Insider Trading Case

John Kinnucan, an independent analyst with a financial services firm, was sitting on his front porch in Portland, Oregon sipping wine on Oct. 25 when two men in business suits emerged from a gray sedan and identified themselves as FBI agents.

They were there to flip him, to have him cooperate and give them an inside look at his clients as part of a wide-ranging investigation of insider trading which has lead to searches of hedge funds in recent days.

Kinnucan’s disclosure of the FBI’s attempt to flip him in an e-mail to about 20 hedge-fund and mutual-fund clients lead to a Wall Street Journal report over the weekend, which apparently forced the FBI’s hand.

On Monday they executed searches at several firms including Level Global Investors of New York and Diamondback Capital Management of Stamford, Conn. and Loch Capital Management. The FBI agents wanted him to talk with SAC Capital Advisors, headed by Steve Cohen, according to reports.

The Feds are also looking at whether Goldman Sachs Group Inc. bankers leaked information about transactions in ways which benefited particular investors, people familiar with the probes told the newspaper.

Investigators are focusing on new ways that non-public information has been passed on to traders by experts with ties to specific industries or companies, the Wall Street Journal reported. They are looking at whether independent analysts and consultants working for companies providing “expert network” services to hedge funds and mutual funds passed along non-public information, the newspaper said.

Because the searches are part of an ongoing investigation, the FBI isn’t commenting.

“We are conducting court-authorized search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation,” Richard Kolko of the FBI’s New York office told the Wall Street Journal. “The matter is sealed. We have no further comment.”

The probe is part of an effort by Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who has made combatting insider trading a top priority.

Kinnucan told the Wall Street Journal that he invited the agents into his kitchen after they showed up to his home.

One of the agents was David Makol, who is known by prosecutors for both his experience with insider-trading investigations as well as his ability to flip defendants to help agents gather evidence, said the newspaper.

It was Makol who flipped one a defendant in another case involving the Galleon Group. In that case Makol confronted David Slaine in a Starbucks near his home in Connecticut, said the newspaper, by “confronting him with an array of details about his life and work.” He became a government informant who wore a wire strapped to his body and helped build what became one of the biggest insider-trading case in two decades, said the newspaper.

After the agents left, Kinnucan sent an email to clients at 12:56 a.m. which he said he was contractually required to send.

“Today two fresh faced eager beavers from the FBI showed up unannounced (obviously) on my doorstep thoroughly convinced that my clients have been trading on copious inside information,” the email said. “(They obviously have been recording my cell phone conversations for quite some time, with what motivation I have no idea.) We obviously beg to differ, so have therefore declined the young gentleman’s gracious offer to wear a wire and therefore ensnare you in their devious web.”

More searches may be executed in the next few days, a person briefed on the investigation who spoke only on the condition of anonymity told the New York Times.

Ron Paul: Prosecute TSA Agents for Groping

Ron  Paul has introduced a law (the “American Traveler Dignity Act”) that would punish TSA agents for groping and x-raying Americans:

A BILL - HR 6416

To ensure that certain Federal employees cannot hide behind immunity.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. NO IMMUNITY FOR CERTAIN AIRPORT SCREENING METHODS.

No law of the United States shall be construed to confer any immunity for a Federal employee or agency or any individual or entity that receives Federal funds, who subjects an individual to any physical contact (including contact with any clothing the individual is wearing), x-rays, or millimeter waves, or aids in the creation of or views a representation of any part of a individual’s body covered by clothing as a condition for such individual to be in an airport or to fly in an aircraft. The preceding sentence shall apply even if the individual or the individual’s parent, guardian, or any other individual gives consent.

He introduced the bill thusly:

I rise this evening to announce that I introduced some legislation today dealing with the calamity that we have found at our airports with TSA. Something has to be done. Everybody is fed up. The people are fed up, the pilots are fed up, I’m fed up.

You know, I’ve come to this floor many times over the past many years and complained about the terrible foreign policy we’ve had, the terrible monetary policy we’ve had, the excessive spending and the debt and also the tax policy. But what we’re doing and what we’re accepting in putting up with at this airport is so symbolic of us just not standing up and saying, “Enough is enough”.

I know the American people are starting to wake up, but our government, those in charge - Congress as well as the executive branch - are doing nothing. Yes, they’re talking about maybe backing off and allowing the pilots to go through. But can you think how silly the whole thing is? The pilot has a gun in the cockpit, and he’s managing this aircraft, which is a missile, and we make him go through this groping x-ray exercise, having people feeling their underwear. It’s absurd, and it’s time we wake up.

The bill I’ve introduced will take care of this. But we have to realize that the real problem is that the American people have been too submissive, we have been too submissive. It’s been going on for a long time, and this was to be expected even from the beginning of the TSA and it’s deeply flawed. Private property should be protected by private individuals, not bureaucrats.

But the bill that I’ve introduced will take care of it. It’s very simple, it’s one paragraph long. It removes the immunity from anybody in the federal government that does anything that you or I can’t do. If you can’t grope another person and if you can’t x-ray people and endanger them with possible x-rays, you can’t take nude photographs of individuals, why do we allow the government to do it? We would go to jail. He’d be immediately arrested if an individual citizen went out and did these things, and yet we just sit there calmly and say, “Oh, they’re making us safe”.

And, besides, the argument from the executive branch is that when you buy a ticket, you have sacrificed your rights, and it is the duty of the government to make us safe. That isn’t the case. You never have to sacrifice your rights. The duty of the government is to protect our rights, not to abuse them and do what they have been doing to us. The pilots hopefully will be exempted from this.

This is a publicity stunt — and a good one — rather than a bill with any chance of being enacted into law.   But Paul makes a good point:  Americans are too submissive to government, which is the price of expecting government to protect us from all possible harm.  It’s time to take stock of ourselves and recalibrate.

Presumably, were such a law to go into effect, it would mean the end of federalized airport security, returning the responsibility to the airports and airlines.   And that would be a welcome change.  But only, as Dave Schuler keeps reminding us, if we actually hold them responsible.   After 9/11, government stepped in and paid off massive settlements to the families of those who lost family members as a result of those four plane crashes — and exempted the airlines from liability.   It has to be clear that we won’t be doing that again.

The big givers: Unions, tribes, and real estate agents

A readers sends on a link to OpenSecrets.org’s novel compilation of the top political donors of the 2007-8 cycle, novel in that it combines state and federal spending.

The results are striking: The biggest spender over all was the National Education Association, the bigger national teachers union, with nearly all of its $ 53.6 million spent on the state level. Six more of the top ten were gambling interests, at least five of them backing Indian casinos, again mostly at the state level.

SEIU comes in fifth, the National Association of Realtors comes in sixth.

Hard federal contribution limits mean that big unions and big corporations spend most of their federal money independently, and it’s not picked up by the contribution chart. But the chart does offer a glimpse of who’s making the most determined efforts to influence large numbers of politicians, and some of the forces affecting policy around gambling, labor law, and the mortgage deduction, to name a few subjects.

Licensing Gone Wild: Armed Government Agents Raiding Barber Shops

Posted by admin | Posted in The Capitol | Posted on 09-11-2010

Let’s say you have a knack for cutting hair.  If you live in Florida, guess how many hours of government-mandated instruction you’d be forced to sit through before you can become a barber?

1,200.

That’s right, well over a thousand hours.  Plus, you’d have to pay thousands of dollars to cover the cost of your classes and pass a written exam.  Only then will the government give you a license—that is, permission to cut hair.

Now what happens if you’re already a successful barber but didn’t have a chance to stop working and jump through all the hoops needed to get that license?

Armed government agents could raid your business and handcuff you in front of your clients. Indeed, this is already happening.  Institute for Justice economic-liberty expert Paul Sherman explains:

According to the Orlando Sentinel:

As many as 14 armed Orange County deputies, including narcotics agents, stormed Strictly Skillz barbershop during business hours on a Saturday in August, handcuffing barbers in front of customers during a busy back-to-school weekend.

It was just one of a series of unprecedented raid-style inspections the Orange County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted with a state regulating agency, targeting several predominantly black- and Hispanic-owned barbershops in the Pine Hills area.

In “sweeps” on Aug. 21 and Sept. 17 targeting at least nine shops, deputies arrested 37 people — the majority charged with “barbering without a license,” a misdemeanor that state records show only three other people have been jailed in Florida in the past 10 years.

The operations were conducted without warrants, under the authority of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation inspectors, who can enter salons at will. Deputies said they found evidence of illegal activity, including guns, drugs and gambling. However, records show that during the two sweeps, and a smaller one in October, just three people were charged with anything other than a licensing violation.

Barbers with years of experience and lots of satisfied customers are being subject to harassment, embarrassment, and hundreds of dollars in fines, simply because they cut hair without having gotten permission from the government.

This is not an isolated incident.

The Institute for Justice recently launched a nationwide “city studies” investigation examining barriers to entrepreneurship in eight American cities.  We found that government at every level is harassing more and more citizens and forcing ever-increasing numbers of people to get government permission just to earn a living.

We also profiled a series of entrepreneurs in a campaign called The Power of One Entrepreneur.   These reports demonstrate the amazing and positive effects that a single entrepreneur can have on their community.  And yet, government barriers around the country are kicking entrepreneurs out of work and preventing countless others from ever realizing their American Dream.

As Institute for Justice President Chip Mellor explains in the USA Today:

America was once known as the Land of Opportunity. It could be again, but not until state and local officials get out of the way of entrepreneurs trying to fulfill their dreams of new business and new prosperity for themselves and their families.

If the government is serious about creating jobs in this jobless recovery, perhaps it should put away the handcuffs and start allowing entrepreneurs to put themselves and others to work.

The Code Pink Killing Fields: How Far Left Activists and Barbara Boxer Aided Enemy Agents in Iraq

It should be noted that the so-called “peace activists” at the Code Pink organization are anything but peace activists. These anti-American radicals and Marxists supported the mass murderer Saddam Hussein who ran one of the most brutal regimes in the 20th century. Code Pink activists currently support the illegitimate Iranian regime, the Marxist Chavez regime in Venezuela and have even met with Taliban Islamists.

“Code Pink Kills American Troops Giving Money to Terrorists” (Target of Opportunity photo)

On November 22, 2004, the socialist anti-American group Code Pink sent out a plea to supporters to help send assistance to the “refugees” from Fallujah, Iraq.

Today, as CODEPINK was busily preparing a year-end humanitarian mission to Iraq, we received an urgent message. It was from our dear friend Dahr Jamail, an amazing American independent journalist who has been risking his life to get the true story of Fallujah to the American public:

“I have just come from a refugee camp in Baghdad with families from Fallujah. The suffering is beyond description. It’s worse than anything you’ve read or anything I’ve written so far.

This is a humanitarian crisis. They need medicines for their camp and the other camps immediately. We have an organization set up of doctors who can distribute the medicines and supplies. BUT WE NEED THEM NOW! THIS CANNOT WAIT!”
Solidarity,
Dahr

The next day, on November 23, 2004, Code Pink announced that they had raised nearly $ 20,000 in one day for “refugess” from Fallujah.

Yesterday we put out an urgent call for aid to refugees from Fallujah, with an initial goal of raising $ 20,000. The response was amazing. From a $ 10 donation from a high school student to a $ 1,000 gift from a medical doctor, the compassion of the American people began to shine through the fog of war. In less than 24 hours, we surpassed our goal and that’s just the online donations!

In addition, a humanitarian aid group donated 300 pounds of priority medical supplies, Cliff Bar is donating high-protein bars for the children, an Iraqi-American returning home offered to be our on-the-ground liaison and people are pledging to do holiday house parties to raise more funds.

When we contacted journalist Dahr Jamail to tell him to good news, he was elated. “Holy cow, $ 20,000 already? I’m catching my breath. This is so beautiful.” Dahr had just returned from a visit to the Red Crescent, who said they could only care for “at most” 60,000 refugees. “This leaves at least 140,000 refugees, mostly women and children, with no support,” said Dahr. “These supplies will be their lifeline.”

On December 3, 2004, Code Pink announced that after only one week into their campaign they had sent $ 30,000 to Iraq. Their contact Dahr Jamail claimed the donations bought blankets, warm clothing, food, portable heaters, cooking stoves, stove and heater fuel, antibiotics, needles, sterile gloves, pain medications, gauze, basic first aid materials, water tanks, pipes, water pumps and water purification materials. Dahr Jamail and Code Pink also claimed that these supplies had already distributed to the refugees. The radicals at Code Pink must run an amazingly efficient operation. We’ll discuss Dahr Jamail below.

Code Pink travels to Iraq

Code Pink later reported that they had collected $ 100,000 in donations. It was also reported that “humanitarian groups” such as the Middle East Children”s Alliance and Operation USA contributed $ 500,000 worth of medical supplies.

Code Pink was ready to deliver their supplies and donations to the Fallujah refugees. But there was a problem. They needed assistance from Congress to approve their trip. In stepped Senator Barabara Boxer (D-CA) along with Representatives Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Henry Waxman (D-CA). These radical members of Congress signed letters to approve their trip to Jordan and the Iraqi border.

These Congressional members wrote this letter despite the fact that in September 2004, Code Pink participated in and just endorsed the Beirut communique, which supported “the right of the people of Iraq and Palestine to resist the occupations” and called for “the unconditional withdrawal of US and “coalition” forces from Iraq.”

With their signatures on the Beirut Communique Code Pink condoned the murder of US soldiers and Marines.
Yet Barbara Boxer and Congressional leftists approved of their trip to the Iraqi border.

Members of Families for Peace, Code Pink and Global Exchange announce that they have sent 600,000 USD in humanitarian aid to the displaced people of Fallujah. (AFP/Khalil Mazraawi)

On December 20, 2004, Code Pink announced their trip to Iraq to deliver supplies to “refugees.” They claimed the November US attack, which virtually leveled the city and left some 2,000 Iraqis and 71 U.S. soldiers dead, also created thousands of refugees, who are living without adequate food, water, electricity and healthcare. On that same day they announced that they would deliver the donations to the Iraqis in late December. They later released a report on their trip to the border.

During our week-long exchange with Iraqis, we heard allegations of US atrocities that made Abu Graib seem like childish pranks: a woman raped in full view of other prisoners, who is now seeking permission from religious leaders to kill herself; a seven-year-old girl, left momentarily in the car while her father stopped at the market, screaming and clawing at the window while a US tank crushed the vehicle; a mother watching in horror as the troops raided her home in the middle of the night, shot her son in the chest and then stomped on him as he bled to death. In Fallujah alone, thousands of civilians were killed in one brutal week. We wept together as we saw gruesome pictures of bodies burned beyond recognition, possibly from the use of napalm, and limbs eaten by dogs because anyone trying to retrieve the dead would be shot. A young Iraqi woman who risked her life taking our humanitarian aid to those too old and infirm to flee was still traumatized by the devastation she witnessed.

After successfully delivering their supplies to the “refugees” from Fallujah Code Pink founder Medea Benjamin told reporters that they had delivered the supplies “to the other side”:

I don’t know of any other case in history in which the parents of fallen soldiers collected medicine … for the families of the ‘other side’,” said Medea Benjamin, the founding director of Global Exchange, a human rights group. “It is a reflection of a growing movement in the United States … opposed to the unjust nature of this war,” she said.

The Code Pink website includes a list of the radical America-haters who met with them in Jordan and at the Iraqi border. The list includes a who’s who of radical American leftists and a list of so-called Iraqi doctors who were invited to the meetings to talk about the supposed war crimes by the US military in Iraq.

Code Pink’s Contact in Iraq - Dahr Jamail

Code Pink and their contact in Iraq Dahr Jamail claimed they were able to collect donations, purchase supplies and donate those supplies to “refugees” in a war zone in one week. If this is true they should be in distribution instead of activism. But, this isn’t the only thing about Dahr Jamail that makes him an exceptional far left activist and reporter. American Dahr Jamail also has incredible terrorist contacts and claims he traveled through the violence in Iraq unscathed as he met with terrorists and terror leaders.
Dahr Jamail wrote about Fallujah in April 2007 in his “Interview with the Mujahadeen” where he interviewed Islamic terrorists.

Tonight, I await a mujahedeen fighter, sipping tea impatiently until the door opens at the pre-set location.

He enters the room, his presence larger than that which his tall height and bulky body projects.

A blue ski mask hides his face, and he chooses to be called “Ahmed” to protect his identity. With a deep, course voice he introduces himself with the greeting ‘Salam Aleikum’ (Peace be upon you), and asks my translator and I to join him in sitting.

I am lucky to have been granted an interview with this man. Only by promising anonymity and having this pre-arranged has he allowed it.

“I want to tell the truth, but the media does not cooperate with the resistance. The media concentrates on the Americans, and does not care about Iraqis,” he says firmly, “This is not a rebellion, this is a resistance against the occupation.”

When asked what he thought about the Bush Administration referring to the situation in Iraq as the front lines of the “War on Terror,” Dr. Nidal had stated, “Here, one would have to distinguish between terrorism and resistance. Terror was unseen here before the invasion. In Falluja, it is not terrorism, it is resistance.”

In July 2005 Dahr Jamail interviewed another terrorist in Jordan while investigating al-Zarqawi.

“The jihad in Iraq is not just Zarqawi. It is up to Allah if we prevail, not dependent on the hand of Zarqawi. If he is killed, the jihad will continue there.”

I ask him about civilian casualties. Does he think Zarqawi cares about the killing of innocent people?

“I have had so many discussions with Iraqis to tell them that Zarqawi doesn’t instruct his followers in the killing of innocent people. If he did this, I would be the first to turn against him. He only targets the Americans and collaborators.”

…Bush officials continue to link Zarqawi to the Iraqi resistance – undoubtedly another bogus claim in that the resistance in Iraq is primarily composed of Iraqi nationalists and Ba’athist elements who are fighting to expel the occupiers from their country, not to create a global Islamic jihad.

Dahr Jamail wrote about several meetings with terrorists over the years. He also wrote about numerous undocumented atrocities that he blamed on the United States. Jamail is a favorite of the far left. He still posts his anti-American propaganda on his website.

Is Dahr Jamail on the up and up?
The Two Malcontents blog doesn’t think so and wrote this about Dahr Jamail in 2006.

The lying leftist Dahr Jamail “creates” two more mothers and their soldier son’s emails in his current piece of crap:

(A Broken, De-Humanized Military In Iraq)

Of course the emails are bullshit propaganda and solely to give a morale boost to our enemies. Jamail abhors not only America (which he usually refers to as the Evil Empire) but more specifically the American military. Jamail has changed his propaganda tactics lately to sound more sympathetic towards U.S. soldiers as being mere cannon fodder (real nice of Jamail). Those that know Jamail will tell you he’s a Marxist piece of shit and works for any enemies of U.S. soldiers. Did we mention he’s good pals with kommie ass klowns Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, Zanaib (JillCarroll), Raed Jarrar?

Front Page Magazine has more on this radical leftist:

His stories, however, were not supported by any evidence – nor even by his own photographs. He showed dozens of photos of corpses that he identified as victims of “Marine snipers,” “napalm,” and “chemical weapons,” though there was no way to verify any of this. He claimed that most of the Iraqis killed by U.S. soldiers were women and children, whose “dead and rotten bodies” had been left rotting in the streets to be eaten by dogs.

We do know that Dahr Jamail has an uncanny ability to find and interview terrorists linked to the Iraqi resistance. For some reason these killers trusted this American. Maybe it was his fierce hatred of America? Or, maybe he offered them more than just an outlet for their propaganda. Then again, maybe he’s just a liar. Or maybe Jamail is a liar, a radical and a traitor? Are we really to believe that Dahr Jamail and Code Pink gave the $ 600,000 worth of donations to the suffering refugees of Fallujah? Of course not.

Barbara Boxer, Raul Grijalva, Henry Waxman and Dennis Kucinich need to explain why they supported these traitors and anti-American radicals who aided the enemy and put our troops in danger.

CBS’s Smith on Valerie Plame Movie: CIA Agent’s Life ‘Torn Apart’ By Bush Administration

Near the end of Monday's CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith interviewed actress Naomi Watts about her latest role as former CIA agent Valerie Plame in the movie 'Fair Game': "…a ripped from the headlines true story of espionage and betrayal. Naomi Watts plays former CIA officer Valerie Plame, whose life was torn apart when her cover was blown by the U.S. government."

After playing a clip from the new film, Smith briefly summarized the controversy this way: "Joe Wilson was sent by the CIA to Niger to determine whether or not yellow-cake uranium was being exported to Iraq….when [he] said no, the Bush administration said somebody's got to pay and that was Valerie Plame." Smith went on to proclaim: "…it is not only this very public story but it is also sort of the private anguish of this family….That is almost torn asunder by this."

Despite pressure from Hamas-linked CAIR, Michigan won’t charge FBI agents in jihadist imam’s death

Last October I wrote this about this case:

According to the indictment, in his mosque in Detroit Luqman Abdullah was preaching “offensive jihad” and the establishment of a Sharia state in North America. This sovereign Isamic state would be ruled by Islamic law - and by the apparent godfather of Abdullah’s movement, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin. Al-Amin is the former Black Panther and convert to Islam who gained fame under the name H. Rap Brown. Al-Amin is now serving a life sentence for murdering two police officers, while his disciples, like Luqman Abdullah, carry on the message he articulated so memorably in the 1960s: “If America don’t come around, we’re gonna burn it down.”

In the spirit of his mentor, Abdullah has told his flock: “America must fall.” He has encouraged the Muslims in his mosque to support Hizballah, the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. He exhorted them to bestir themselves to pious deeds: “We should be figuring out how to fight the Kuffar” - that is, unbelievers. “We got to take out the U.S. government. The U.S. government is nothing but Kuffars.” Among the unbelievers were FBI agents, about whom Abdullah declared: “Deal with them, deal with them the way, the way they supposed to be dealt with…. It’s not that complicated, man….If they are coming to get me I’ll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody.” A law enforcement official wrote in an affidavit that “Abdullah and his followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting” - in accord with Abdullah’s dictum that every Muslim believer should “have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed.”

Abdullah found justification for all this in the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an, which he said “justified stealing, robbing and other illegal acts, as long as they profit Islam.”

Hamas-linked CAIR tried, but has failed, to make this out to be some kind of civil rights case. Has that repulsive gang of thugs, subversives, seditionists and traitors ever seen an anti-terror law or action that they favored? They are consistently trying to hamstring law enforcement efforts against the jihad. Yet the media still for the most part, as in this AP story, gives them a free pass. Note how the “speculation” of “some” is passed on here to sour readers on the accuracy of the FBI report.

“AG: FBI agents won’t be charged in Imam’s death,” by Ed White for Associated Press, September 30 (thanks to all who sent this in):

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan’s attorney general said Thursday that he won’t file criminal charges against FBI agents who shot a Detroit mosque leader 20 times, killing him during a raid last year on a suburban warehouse.

It is “undisputed” that Luqman Ameen Abdullah fired at agents, resisted arrest and rejected demands to surrender, Attorney General Mike Cox said.

“Under Michigan law, law enforcement agents are justified in using deadly force in these types of situations, and therefore we found no crimes,” Cox said in a written statement.

Some leaders in the local Muslim community have questioned whether the agents used excessive force. Besides being shot 20 times, Abdullah had wounds that an independent forensic pathologist said were caused by an FBI dog killed during the raid last October.

Some have speculated that Abdullah may have fired his gun while trying to defend himself from the dog. Indeed, Cox’s report said agents deployed the dog after the suspect failed to show his hands while on his stomach on the ground.

The dog began biting Abdullah, who rolled over, revealed a gun and fired at the dog and at agents, the report said.

Four agents returned fire and Abdullah was killed, the report said.

“It is clear that the agents acted in self-defense and/or in defense of others,” the report said. “The facts show Abdullah making a series of decisions that resulted in the use of deadly force against him - and ultimately his death.

“None of Abdullah’s followers who complied with the … commands were injured in any way,” the report said, referring to four others detained after the raid….

The FBI has described her husband as a leader of a radical Sunni group that wants to create an Islamic state within the U.S. Authorities say Abdullah preached hate for the government and encouraged his followers to commit violence, especially against police and federal agents.

He told an FBI informant that if the government messed with him, “it will be straight up war,” according to a court document. Abdullah’s family, however, has denied that he was anti-government….

Dawud Walid, the director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he wants to read the attorney general’s report before commenting. But he repeated his call for all evidence to be released to the public.

The Justice Department’s civil rights division has also been investigating Abdullah’s death.

“Until those results are made public, along with information involved in this case, many of us won’t be satisfied,” Walid said.

Aafia Siddiqui sentenced to 86 years for attempted murder of U.S. soldiers and FBI agents

First, she was “mentally ill,” and now she says she’s not. Then again, the insanity defense didn’t work out, anyway, and so turned out not to be useful. An update this story.

“Pakistani Woman Sentenced to 86 Years for Trying to Kill Americans,” by Chad Bray for the Wall Street Journal, September 23 (thanks to Sr. Soph):

NEW YORK-A Pakistani woman trained as a scientist in the U.S. was sentenced to 86 years in prison Thursday after she was convicted of trying to kill U.S. Army soldiers and FBI agents in Afghanistan two years ago.

Aafia Siddiqui, 38 years old, was convicted in February of grabbing a soldier’s M-4 assault rifle and trying to shoot an assembled group of Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and soldiers at an Afghan police compound in July 2008.

The U.S. team had traveled to the compound in Ghazni, Afghanistan, to interview her after she taken into custody by Afghan authorities, prosecutors said. Ms. Siddiqui was found at the time with materials that included handwritten notes referring to a “mass casualty attack” in the U.S. and listed several landmark locations in New York City, prosecutors said.

Prior to her sentencing, Ms. Siddiqui again proclaimed her innocence and disputed claims by her lawyers that she has a mental illness.

“I do not want a 9/11,” she said. “I do not want any bloodshed.”

A jury found Ms. Siddiqui guilty in February of seven charges, including two counts of attempted murder. The jury found there wasn’t premeditation in the attempted murder charges.

After she was sentenced Thursday, Ms. Siddiqui turned to the audience and urged the public to forgive the persons involved in her case and not to take any actions of revenge.

How magnanimous.

Prosecutors had alleged that Ms. Siddiqui, unbeknownst to the Americans who traveled to Ghazni, was behind a curtain in the second-floor room where they gathered. She burst from behind the curtain, grabbed an American soldier’s rifle and started firing, prosecutors said.

She was shot in the abdomen by a soldier who returned fire with his sidearm, prosecutors said.

Ms. Siddiqui, who received graduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University in biology and neuroscience while living in the U.S. between 1991 and June 2002, has denied grabbing the weapon or having any familiarity with firearms.

At trial, she testified that she was simply trying to escape the room and was shot by someone who saw her. She claimed she was concerned at the time about being transferred to a “secret” prison.

“He saw me and he got scared. He said, ‘she’s free’ or ‘she’s loose,’ ” she said at the time.

On Thursday, Ms. Siddiqui, who has previously expressed displeasure with her lawyers and the U.S. legal process, said that she didn’t want the lawyers on her case to file an appeal and that she didn’t want them to take any further action in her case.

Ms. Siddiqui’s mental state has loomed large over her trial, with her lawyers claiming she suffers from schizophrenia.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who is presiding, found her comptent to stand trial. He noted Thursday that experts for the defense and the prosecution gave conflicting opinions about Ms. Siddiqui’s mental state and that she had been uncooperative with prison psychologists.

During the hearing, Ms. Siddiqui raised her hands and shook her head several times when her lawyer, Dawn Cardi, argued she had a mental illness.

“I do not have any mental illness,” Ms. Siddiqui said.

The judge ordered that she receive periodic mental evaluations while serving her sentence.
